A Hull mum who fed her four-year-old daughter drugs has been told by top judges she deserves every day of her jail term.
Michala Pyke, of Ella Street in west Hull, and John Rytting were found guilty of child cruelty by a jury at Hull Crown Court after feeding little Poppy Widdison drugs, including diazapam, heroin, methadone and ketamine.
Poppy died in June 2013 after suffering a cardiac arrest at Rytting's "squalid" home in Oliver Court, Grimsby, where prescription and controlled drugs were "left lying around".
A trial heard text messages between Pyke and Rytting talked about Poppy having a "blue Smartie" - believed to be a reference to the sedative diazepam, in the form of a blue tablet.
An ambulance was called to Rytting's home, on June 9, 2013, where Poppy was found to be "unresponsive, blue and not breathing". She was taken to hospital but died the next day.
While a post-mortem could not establish the cause of her death, toxicology tests of her blood and hair revealed she had been exposed to and ingested significant amounts of heroin and methadone for a period of between two and six months before her death.
While the drugs did not contribute to her death, experts concluded she was subjected to a "long period of ill-treatment and neglect".
Pyke appealed the 13-year sentence she was handed in January because it was too long, but senior judges in London’s Court of Appeal have said her punishment was “justified”.
Describing Poppy's short life as "tragic", Mr Justice Gilbart told the court she was born addicted to heroin because of her mother's habit.
Pyke's lawyers argued her overall jail term was too tough considering all her offences were part of the same offending behaviour.
