A stepfather and grandfather of a three-year-old girl have been arrested as they are suspected of raping and murdering the child. A doctor said that when Michelle Aylin “N” arrived she had visible injury marks on her ankles, left knee, and right cheekbone. The alleged incident reportedly happened in Mexico’s Tepic, Nayarit. The young girl was allegedly repeatedly raped and suffocated to death before her lifeless body was taken to a hospital by her stepdad César Raúl on Sunday, September 27.
Mexican news magazine Proceso stated that Michelle’s mother was at work when Raúl took the child to the hospital. The mother and the stepfather met four months ago through Facebook. Before September 27, Michelle was in the care of her maternal grandad, whose name has not been revealed. Prosecutor Petronilo Díaz Ponce-Medrano said, "The signs or symptoms of sexual abuse were easily noticeable by those who had custody or care [of Michelle]".
Local media reports stated that initially the cause of death of Michelle was attributed to cardiac arrest, following asphyxia by suffocation. The 31-year-old Raúl was arrested by the State Attorney General's Office after "traces of sexual violence and various physical assaults" were found. A few hours later, the grandfather, who has a history of sexually abusing a minor in 2014, was also arrested.
Nayarit Governor Antonio Echevarría García spoke of the tragic incident and said: “The loss of life hurts in any case, but it goes deep when it comes to girls or boys. As a citizen, I join the demand for clarification of the case, demanding that the Attorney General’s Office carry out the necessary investigations and that whoever is responsible for this brutal crime be punished with the full weight of the law.” The State Attorney General's Office also condemned the incident “that occurred in the city of Tepic, where the life of a child under three years of age was taken away from her."
Meanwhile, reports said that Michelle's mother has been cooperating with the authorities in the investigation.
