WASHINGTON (TNND) — Meta is ending its fact-checking program and making other changes to its content moderation policies in a move the company says is in the interest of enhancing free speech online.

Along with ending its fact-checking program, the company said it would be removing some speech restrictions on Facebook, Instagram and Threads. Topics like immigration and gender identity that are frequently debated by lawmakers in Washington will see less restrictions moving forward.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that the longstanding content moderation policies had strayed too far from their core mission and become overburdensome on users, leading to posts being censored or removed even when they don’t violate the rules.

“We’re going to get back to our roots and focus on reducing mistakes, simplifying our policies and restoring free expression on our platforms,” Zuckerberg said in a video posted online Tuesday. “More specifically, we’re going to get rid of fact-checkers and replace them with Community Notes similar to X, starting in the U.S.”

The move to switch to a Community Notes system follows Elon Musk-owned X, which slashed content moderation and fact-checking staff and policies since the billionaire Tesla and SpaceX leader bought the company. Musk has proclaimed X to be a platform dedicated to free speech and has become a staunch political ally of President-elect Donald Trump, who has railed against social media companies for what he sees as political bias against him and his followers.

Biden rails against Meta’s fact-checking change, suggests it’s un-American: ‘Really shameful’

President Biden slammed Meta on Friday for ending its third-party fact-checking program, arguing that the change goes against American values and is “shameful.”

“The whole idea of walking away from facts checking [sic] as well as not reporting anything having to do with, uh, um, discrimination regarding TPS I find to be just contrary to American justice,” Biden said in response to a reporter’s question about Meta’s recent policy shift.

It’s unclear what the 82-year-old president was referring to when he suggested Meta was not reporting discrimination “regarding TPS,” an acronym for the Temporary Protected Status program offered to foreign nationals from certain countries.

You all have to check this video.

Apart from obvious bias, snopes, member of some "official fact checking organization", and approved by them, is basically a brothel, and the founder is a thief, whore, and a liar

The only social media that I participate in is FB and X. I really like how well community notes works. "Independent/third party" fact checking always seemed doomed from the get-go. The one and only time I got put into FB jail by these "fact checkers" was when I shared a photo that was from another FB acct. that had over 15k likes and nothing happened to the original poster/post.
