An Indianapolis mother is behind bars after being arrested for neglect of a dependent resulting in death.
The arrest comes after the suspect’s 3-year-old daughter, Calea Hawkins, died from a fentanyl related overdose last July at the Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at St. Vincent.

Police believe the young girl overdosed and was found unresponsive at an apartment complex near 62nd and Georgetown.

The coroner ruled the death an accident, but the victim’s mother, 24-year-old Mea Hawkins, is now charged with the fatal neglect.

Charging documents indicated that investigators believed Hawkins placed the girl in a situation that endangered her life or health by exposing her to fentanyl. The probable cause affidavit also referenced a video showing Hawkins in bed with the girl while holding foil and what appeared to be drug residue.
The paternal grandmother, Katrina Clemens, insists the suspect struggled with substance abuse long before the overdose, but still maintained custody of the victim.

“Mea was in full-blown addiction. I do know that for a fact,” said Clemens. “I mean, the signs were all there.”

An Indianapolis mother appeared in a Marion County courtroom Thursday and was charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in death and neglect of a dependent resulting in bodily injury.

According to court documents, Mea Hawkins' 3-year-old daughter was found unresponsive with foam coming out of her mouth on July 28, 2025. Hawkins allegedly told police her daughter and the child's older sibling were sleeping on a coach at friend's home. Hawkins said she was sleeping in another room.
Court documents say Hawkins had brought the children over to a male friend's home to stay the night. The male friend said he woke up to find Hawkins screaming and carrying the 3-year-old out of the front door. The male called for an ambulance, and medics took the 3-year-old to St. Vincent Peyton Manning Children's Hospital.
According to court documents, the 3-year-old was pronounced deceased at 7:12 a.m. Court records say an autopsy was performed Nov. 17, 2025, and the autopsy report showed the 3-year-old died from accidental fentanyl intoxication. Court documents say Hawkins tested positive for fentanyl.

Court documents show Hawkins and the male friend texted about fentanyl use, and police received photos and videos from family members showing Hawkins in bed with the 3-year-old. In the video, court documents say, Hawkins can be seen holding foil containing a burnt residue.

According to court documents, another child said the male friend kept "medicine" for Hawkins at his home, but the child allegedly said she never saw her mother take it. The child described pills and the containers they were kept in.
