A Peoria babysitter is accused of causing injuries to a child who was in her care last month, even though she reportedly told police she would never hurt a baby.
Prosecutors have charged Mattie Breedlove, 57, with aggravated battery.
The report said the boy had two black eyes, bruising, “minor lumps” to both sides of his forehead, a missing tooth that appeared to be knocked out, and a bruise on his right ear.
The police report said Breedlove acknowledged she sometimes has to discipline children in her care by putting them in a corner or making them hold cans straight out until their arms get tired.
Breedlove denied using a belt or sandal to physically discipline the youngsters, according to the report. She claimed three children in her care lied about her “whooping.”

Mattie Breedlove is charged with aggravated battery
During a brief court hearing in Peoria County Circuit Court, Assistant State’s Attorney Terry Muench said Mattie Breedlove, 57, allegedly struck the child on July 19. Breedlove is related to the victim, the prosecutor said in open court.
The charge, aggravated battery, is probationable and carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison. She was released from custody on several conditions including that she have no unsupervised visits with children without their parents being present.
According to the prosecutor, officers were called to a home for an alleged incident of child abuse. A woman there said her son, who was under the age of 1, had been left with Breedlove and when he came home, he was missing a tooth and had marks on his face, the prosecutor said in open court.
Another sibling of the baby said she had heard him crying in another room and allegedly heard Breedlove hitting him.
