38-year-old Malike Stewart was arrested after a dead newborn was discovered in Lynchburg on Thursday, Lynchburg Police Department said.

LPD said a juvenile woman arrived at the Lynchburg General Hospital in need of medical attention on Thursday. It was then found that she had recently given birth at a residence. Police went to the home and found evidence of the birth, but initially couldn’t find the child.
Authorities said detectives obtained a search warrant and searched the home, and eventually found the body of a deceased newborn. The cause of death is currently under investigation. Police are also working with the Lynchburg Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office to determine appropriate charges related to this case. Social Services are also involved in the investigation.

Warrants are shedding new light on the death of a newborn baby in Lynchburg.

Court documents say on Feb. 27 a juvenile female showed up to Lynchburg General Hospital after just giving birth at home in a bathtub.

However, she had no child with her when she went to the hospital.
The young girl told officials she didn't realize she was pregnant.

She initially told hospital staff "the baby was alive but then it wasn't."

The girl said she gave the child to her step-father, Mialke Stewart.

She gave police the address of the home where she gave birth.
Investigators executed a search warrant where they found a large amount of blood and tissue but no child.

Stewart told police he didn't know where the child was or what had happened.
The next day during another search of the home, police found a deceased fetus with apparent injuries inside of a plastic bag in a backpack.

Warrants say Stewart then changed his story and told police he had found the deceased child, placed it in a backpack, and hid it.
