NATCHEZ, Miss. (WLBT/Gray News) - A traffic stop led to the discovery of skeletal remains in Mississippi on Thursday.
Natchez Police Department Commander Jerry Ford says officers pulled over the driver of a small pickup truck and detained him after seeing drug paraphernalia in the truck.
After the driver was detained at the scene, he told officers something “spontaneously” that immediately got their attention.
“The suspect at that time stated that he had information about a corpse in the nearby area,” Ford said.
Ford says officers immediately called for backup.
“We came out and actually went off in the woods maybe 10 feet, and discovered that there was a dead corpse,” Ford said.
Ford says the body had been there for quite some time and that all that was left was the victim’s skeleton, but the head was missing from the rest of the body.
“We really don’t want to speculate as to what his role is or what he knows or don’t know, but we’re just basically sticking to the facts at this particular time, trying to see where it’s going to lead to,” he said.
