A Blue Lake man is in custody on suspicion of murdering 4-year-old Dylan Blount-Chambers -- the grandson of the woman he is dating, according to the boy's mother.

The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office arrested Leon Alyious Bigleggins, 25, after detectives served a search warrant at a house on Sabertooth Road near Titlow Hill on Sunday afternoon.

Blount-Chambers' grandmother reportedly found the child having difficulty breathing late Saturday night. Donna Ray Blount called an ambulance and the boy was transported to Mad River Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11 p.m.

The child's body had signs of ongoing abuse, the Sheriff's Office reported, with severe bruises that prompted detectives to investigate further.

Tracy Blount said her son was staying at his grandmother's house for the summer, and that she'd dropped him off on July 3, the last time she'd seen him.

â€￾I'm still in shock,â€￾ Tracy Blount said. “I really don't know anything at this point.â€￾

Tracy Blount said that Bigleggins was dating her mother, Donna Ray Blount, who works cleaning homes and doing yard work during the day. Bigleggins -- a beginning mixed martial arts fighter -- would watch Blount-Chambers when Donna Blount was away, something that Tracy Blount said she had no reason to be uncomfortable with.

â€￾Dylan loved him,â€￾ Tracy Blount said. “I don't want to believe that he (Bigleggins) is involved, but they think he is.â€￾

Detectives working on the case said that Bigleggins is the only suspect in the case at this point, and that interviews with the family would continue later this week.

As an amateur MMA fighter, he's had one fight. He lost in spectacular fashion:
But the highlight reel moment of the night was Lamar Gosey’s 13-second TKO of Leon Big Leggins, which Luo described as being one of the most shocking fights he’d ever seen. Especially given his experience level (four months), Gosey’s aptitude was apparent.

i am apalled at some of the things being said here...i love my son very much and he enjoyed his time with his grandma. i want the man who did this dead and i never would have imagined that he would be hurt there. i had no idea that he was being left in leons care during the day.also i do not appreciate the times-standard twisting the words i said. i did not say that i didn't believe leon bigleggins did it, i said i can not believe that someone he loved so much could do this to him and who i thought loved him in return.

a 25 yr old dating a grandmother??
Not too out of the ordinary these days I guess but caught my attention.

i had no idea that he was being left in leons care during the day
*cough*

Court proceedings in child murder case edge forward
A preliminary hearing for the man accused of killing a 4-year-old boy outside Blue Lake this summer has been pushed back again.

The prosecution is now scheduled to lay out its case against 25-year-old Leon Alyious Bigleggins on Dec. 15 in a hearing that could take two days. In Humboldt County Superior Court on Friday, public defender David Lee said that he had received a substantial amount of discovery earlier this week, including the autopsy report on Dylan Blount-Chambers.

Lee said that he needs to give an expert time to review the material, and said he would not know whether that expert will testify at the hearing until after he's had a chance to look at the review.

The autopsy report found that the boy died from blunt-force trauma to his head and stomach, according to the Humboldt County Coroner's Office. Bigleggins has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, assault on a child and felony child abuse.

For a minute there I thought DV was pulling a fast one, seeing if we're awake....but no, this is another true story of a little guy whose life was stolen apparently by some adult sized fuckhead. Dylan's picture makes me feel so sad inside. There is a bit of a smile on his little face but no smile whatsoever in his eyes.

Child murder case moves forward; forensic pathologist and grandmother testify in first day of preliminary hearing

At the preliminary hearing of Leon Alyious Bigleggins, 26, who stands accused of murdering 4-year-old Dylan Blount-Chambers, Dylan's grandmother testified that Bigleggins, her then boyfriend, hid the extensive injuries he inflicted on her grandson that she and prosecutors allege ultimately resulted in his death.

Donna Blount tearfully explained that Dylan had come to stay with her and Bigleggins at her house off Sabertooth Road near Blue Lake on July 3 of last year. Blount said that up until Dylan's death on July 24, 2010, Bigleggins took care of her grandson while she was at work -- sometimes until as late at 9 p.m. -- seven days a week.

â€￾Leon took total control of him (Dylan),â€￾ she said. “He wouldn't even let me go into the bathroom with him. He said he was a big boy.â€￾

But, Blount said, she never suspected that Bigleggins was abusing him.
â€￾I thought he was doing all this to help me, instead he was torturing my grandson,â€￾ Blount said.

Bigleggins, who appeared before the court in handcuffs and an orange jumpsuit Monday, has been charged with murder and two counts of child abuse in connection to Dylan's death -- charges to which he has pleaded not guilty. If convicted he could face life in prison.

During the preliminary hearing, which was continued to today by Judge Christopher Wilson to allow for further witness testimony, forensic pathologist Mark Super painted a gruesome picture of the injuries that led up to the 4-year-old's death.

During cross examination by public defender David Lee and District Attorney Paul Gallegos, who is prosecuting the case, Super -- who performed an autopsy on Dylan on July 27, 2010 -- said that the official cause of Dylan's death was blunt force trauma to the abdomen or head, which resulted in internal injuries.

According to Super, Dylan suffered a blow, or series of blows, to his abdomen that resulted in a tear in his bowel causing fecal matter to leak into his abdominal cavity. The 4-year-old also had bruising on the backside of his head, which may have rendered him unconscious and led to his death, Super said.

In addition to the bruising on Dylan's head, Super also noted the bruising on other parts of the boy's body in photo after photo presented by Gallegos.

â€￾These types of bruises are unusual and would absolutely not come from child's play or by appropriate parental discipline,â€￾ he said, noting the bruising and abrasions covering the boy's groin, the palms of his hands, his buttocks and the tops of his feet.

During his testimony, Super said that the bruises were nonspecific and that he was unable to determine a pattern that might explain what caused them. He also said he was unable to tell how old the bruises were.

â€￾The problem is that they are so extensive, it is hard to tell one bruise from another,â€￾ Super said. “He was almost entirely covered with bruises and abrasions.â€￾

During her testimony, Blount said that she never noticed the bruises covering her grandson -- bruises that Super said should have grabbed a person's attention. When she did ask Bigleggins about scratches on Dylan's hand, she said he told her he had gotten his hand stuck in thistles.

â€￾I saw the photos and they made me puke,â€￾ she said, wiping away tears. “I would never cause injury to a child.â€￾

Blount will appear in court again today for further questioning. According to Gallegos, an additional three witnesses are also expected to testify.

What was their justification for not charging granny??

The ME said there was basically no way someone wouldn't notice these bruises, so WTF??

A 27-year-old Arcata man pleaded guilty today to voluntary manslaughter stemming from the beating death of a 4-year-old boy.

Under a plea agreement reached with the district attorney's office and accepted by Humboldt County Superior Court Judge Timothy Cissna this afternoon, Leon Alyious Bigleggins pleaded guilty to manslaughter and felony child abuse charges in a deal that will see him sentenced to 18 years and four months in prison at a hearing next month.

Arrested after the July 2010 death of 4-year-old Dylan Blount-Chambers, Bigleggins was preparing to stand trial on a murder charge that carried a potential sentence of 25 years to life in prison, if he was convicted. A training mixed-martial arts fighter, Bigleggins was the boyfriend of Dylan's grandmother and one of the boy's primary caregivers. Preliminary hearing testimony indicated he would discipline Dylan by whipping him with a broken clothes hanger, kicking him in the chest and forcing him to do squats and sit ups in the trailer they lived in on a property near Blue Lake.
[...]

Bigleggins will receive two strikes under the plea agreement, waived all rights to appeal and will serve at least 85 percent of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
