Gainesville police have arrested and charged a 29-year-old man they say attacked an 80-year-old woman in her home after she finished yard work on Thursday.
Kevis Davon Johnson, who is homeless, was charged with attempted sexual battery of a victim 18 or older and physically helpless, battery of a person 65 or older and burglary of an occupied dwelling for the case.
Police said the 80-year-old was completing yard work outside her Gainesville home at 2:45 p.m. on Thursday, when she saw Johnson walk by holding what appeared to be a blanket. The arrest report states she said hello and asked how he was doing, and Johnson replied that he “was fine,” and continued walking. He then sat on the curb across the street.
A few minutes later, according to the report, the woman looked up and saw that Johnson was gone but “thought nothing of it.” When she returned inside her house to eat, police said she realized her back door was ajar. She closed the door, and continued to make lunch.
The report said Johnson then walked up behind the woman and covered her mouth and nose with his hands. As she tried to fight him back, police said, Johnson gripped tighter and tried pulling down her pants and punching her with a closed fist.
When she tried running away, the report said, she was able to run from the kitchen to the laundry room before falling. Police said Johnson — listed as 200 pounds — then sat on top of her, covering her mouth and nose with the blanket, and began punching and slamming her head to the ground.
Johnson then started masturbating and shoving his fingers into her mouth and licking her face, according to the report.
The woman tried hitting Johnson with nearby paint cans but he initially knocked them out of her hand, police said, until she finally grabbed a full can and hit him in the head twice.
She escaped through the back door and called for help, when a neighbor heard and called law enforcement. The report said her eyes, knees and nose were swollen, and she had cuts on her head and face.
Police said Johnson was found in the bushes around seven houses down the block with a bleeding cut on his forehead. The report said he initially denied attacking the woman, saying he got the injury from an abandoned house where he slept.
He then reportedly asked detectives, without any prompting, whether a witness saw him enter the house.
Johnson is booked in the Alachua County Jail, with bail set at $2.5 million. While being reported for the battery case, he was also identified as a suspect and subsequently charged in a burglary that occurred in Gainesville over the weekend.
