Jonathan Ortiz Charged With Murder In Infant Daughter's Slaying

The father of a 4-month-old girl fatally injured while in his care in South Chicago Heights this week was charged this evening with the girl’s murder, police said.

Jonathan Ortiz, 23, father of Sophia Ortiz, 4 months, was charged with murder this evening after the Cook County medical examiner’s office determined she died from multiple injuries due to child abuse, said South Chicago Heights Police Chief Bill Joyce.

Sophia was declared dead at 8:55 p.m. Tuesday at Advocate Hope Children’s Hospital in Oak Lawn, authorities said.

Sophia had been dropped off Saturday afternoon at Ortiz’s home in the 100 block of West 31st Street in South Chicago Heights and he called 911 around 3 a.m. Monday, according to Joyce. The baby was under his care, Joyce said.

Paramedics did cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Sophia at the home and in the ambulance before they arrived at St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights, where staff were able to revive her, Joyce said.

But the girl was still unresponsive and unable to breathe on her own, and was airlifted to Hope, where she was on life support until she died.

Investigators, including South Chicago Heights Police Detective Sergeant Jake Kozinski and Illinois State Police Sergeant Tammy Girten, gathered enough evidence to have Ortiz charged, but he did not make a statement to police, Joyce said.

Child welfare officials also are investigating an allegation of abuse in the case.

DCFS has had no prior contact or prior investigations involving the family, and no other children were in his care, DCFS spokesman Kendall Marlowe said.

Sophia lived in the 0-to-100 block of West 31st Street in south suburban Steger, about five blocks away from the South Chicago Heights address, according to the medical examiner’s office.[...]

Seems like us parents at the DD are behind on the latest parenting trend to use on fussy babies. Can't get them to shut up smother them with a pillow. That don't work you could always smash them into a couple walls an open or closed handed fist is good for the gut punches. Trust me you follow their lead you will have a quiet child in no time. Coz they're DEAD!
