Two Gloucester brothers were arrested yesterday in the beating of a man outside a Gloucester bar Saturday morning, an attack that family and friends are calling a hate crime.

Gloucester police charged Jonathan Chadwick, 23, and his brother William, 21, with aggravated assault and battery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon in the beating of Justin Goodwin, 33, of Salem. He was beaten outside Old Timer's Tavern on Rogers Street at about 12:30 a.m.

Goodwin, who underwent nearly 10 hours of surgery Sunday for severe head trauma at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, was first transported to Beverly Hospital following the beating, said Anna Vaters, a close friend who communicated with Goodwin in the hospital yesterday through written notes.

Goodwin suffered injuries to his jaw, nose, cheekbone, and eye sockets, family members said. He cannot see out of his right eye or hear out of his right ear. His jaw will be wired shut for about two months, family members said.

Shortly after arriving at the bar with his sister, Kalem, and her boyfriend, Goodwin was approached by a group of about five men yelling homosexual slurs, Vaters said. She said that Goodwin wrote out the details of the encounter for her.

Noticing the raucous incident, the bouncer escorted Goodwin, his sister, and her boyfriend out the back door into an alleyway and locked the door, Goodwin told Vaters.

Vaters said she asked Goodwin if he believed it was a "gay bashing," to which he replied in writing, "most definitely."

People like these two asshats outrage me! Its like if you dont like homosexuals DONT TALK TO THEM!!! They already get enough criticism as it is... Now this poor man is going to be traumatized for the rest of his life just because he is attracted to someone of the same sex. :argh: what fuckin losers

As the mother of a gay son, this is one of my worst fears. It's always in the back of my head. And as my son says, "being gay is only 2% of who I am". The other 98% has nothing to do with him being gay. He is the most intelligent person on this earth, the most kind, generous, funny person ever!!

I don't understand why anyone in the world would hurt someone just because they are gay!! It's not like they come on to straight people! And I can tell you by that pic that one boy is so gay. He must be struggling with it and taking out his own feelings on others!!

I hate these men, they have destroyed this young man's life and hurt his family and friends deeply.

I hope they go to prison for a long time, and I hope Bubba teaches them what it is to be forced to do the the very thing they hate so much!!

Ok, rage is boiling up the more I type.........

What is so scary or threatning about homosexuals? They're attracted to someone of the same sex, BIG DEAL. Like Wanda Sykes said, if you don't believe in same sex marriage, don't marry someone of the same sex. Simple as that. I hope these pricks get the harshest punishment allowed!

Clearly the Dumb and Dumber brothers are thugs. I bet one or both of them is a closet case. I'd like to see them both beaten to a pulp for being thugs. Bet they wouldn't like that too much.

How is being gay hurting anyone? I have never understood why people take such offense to things that concern them not.

I wish Justin Goodwin a speedy recovery.

I wish these two thugtards would take themselves out of the gene pool.

If they hadn't focused on "gay", they would have picked another group. Some people just seem evil that way. I often wonder how people get to that way of thinking... leads lots of credence to the idea of "just plain evil".

Here's a case where I actually agree with "an eye for an eye."
I've stated before that I'm against murdering someone who served their time and got released, but I don't think jail time cuts it for this sort of thing.

In a world made of my wishes:

Doctors would (I'm sure they have) meticulously document all the injuries this young man received. The two yutes in question here would be let off on a technicality at their trial. This would just be a sham as they have already been found guilty by, um, well, they did it, there's no question of that.

So they walk out of court jeering and smirking, strutting their gangsta badass hitman mentality selves, kings of their fuckstick worlds. While in their good moods (akin to having a night out at a bar with your sister and her boyfriend) they get jumped by carefully selected persons with the skill sets necessary to attempt to cause exactly the same injuries to these two that they inflicted on that young man.

They would be yelling threats about how they were going to man-rape them before they killed them all the while, to enduce sufficient terror, which I'm sure Justin felt.

If they cannot exactly match the injuries, they are encourage to err on the side of excess..say if the right eye can't be made to not work without making it resemble a grape stepped on by a horse, so be it.

Making them cry and beg like the little bitches they have to really be to do something like this is a plus as well. After, they can be informed that no, there will be no man rape, nor death, but oh sorry, we were kidding about the not guilty thing, too. Enjoy prison after the hospital fellas. Byebye :)

Fucking pathetic losers. hating themselves for whatever the fuck their issues are and beating an innocent man into the hospital. Hope they are both beaten daily in prison.

Wait, what?

So, sentence + beating is not okay, but beating + sentence is?

I don't follow. :tongue2:

Anyway, while I cannot stand the "logic" behind hate crime legislation, I wouldn't mind if these little shits got some exceptional sentencing so they may experience a world where they'll use a lot more than 5 men to jump you and developing homosexual tendencies of your own is really only a matter of time.

And, did I read that right? The bouncer shoved them outside and locked the door behind them? Did the attack occur before or after that? If it was after, might the establishment bear some liability?

This beating would be -part- of their sentencing :p

Besides, the one I am against is beating to death.

The other guy, you can't really eye for an eye him anyway, I mean what, take him back in time till he's 15 then have a 20 year old girl sleep with him? He was also convicted of robbery...and he's homeless. steal his newspapers? his clothing, which you probably wouldn't want to touch? lol

Ohhhhh... gotcha. So, in this world of yours, there's no Constitution, and you can find people who are okay jumping a couple of kids who don't deserve to be locked up themselves?

Well, in that case - I'm totally on board.

We've got thousands of those people already. Armed forces, especially special ops, professional athletes and fighters.

I'm sure a few would be fine with putting a lump on two punks who broke an innocent guy's face and maybe cost him some sight and hearing just because he likes penis.

Those jackasses also are not 'kids' in my mind at all.
And they do deserve sentences, just after they get their beating.

As far as the constitution thing, well, of course not, I led with "In a world made of my wishes"

though, I suppose in a world made of that, those folk wouldn't have existed in the first place.

Sports, video games, alcohol, butterscotch pudding, bacon double whoppers and bisexual girls most definitely would, though.

I'm down with everything but the butterscotch pudding. When I was a little kid (circa 4), I loved the shit. Then my dad was kind enough to tell me what it looked like, if you know what I mean. That stuck with me, and butterscotch has never tasted the same, since.

In my world, the pudding would be traded for horror movies and, since I could only get through half of a bacon double whopper (and that would be a waste), I'd have to opt for a Jack's spicy chicken sandwich, instead.

All that said, I'd like to believe good people would have a problem jumping (i.e. multiple people) anyone, even a bad person. You're probably right, though.

I would be happy if prison meant prison... No cable TV, no school yard games, no fun stuff, and a cira 1970 school lunch menu. Just education, treatment, and lock down. Many ex-cons have little trouble with doing time.

Police have arrested a second suspect who was allegedly involved in beating a Salem man outside of the Old Timer's Tavern on Saturday. And the latest suspect charged is already on his way to serving a year in jail after being sentenced yesterday on a previous charge.

Jonathan Chadwick, 23, of 288 Western Ave., Gloucester, turned himself into police at 10 p.m. Monday night and is being charged with aggravated assault and battery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon in the Old Timer's case, which the victim's family alleges was a gay hate crime.

Chadwick told police he turned himself in because he knew police were looking for him.

His younger brother, 21-year-old William J. Chadwick, of 5 Elwell St., Gloucester was arrested Monday afternoon and will face the same charges.

Both brothers were arraigned in Gloucester District Court yesterday morning and were held without bail. They will return to Gloucester District Court on Tuesday, April 21, for a dangerousness hearing.

In addition, the two had charges tied to 2006 crimes reinstated. Jonathan Chadwick was sentenced yesterday to 21/2 years in jail, with one year to serve, on charges of larceny and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon stemming from an incident in August 2006. Jonathan Chadwick pleaded to guilty to lesser charges than two companions found guilty of jumping a tourist, kicking him about the head and body, and then stealing his wallet, cell phone and sunglasses.

William Chadwick was dealt an 18-month suspended sentence yesterday on charges of marijuana possession, marijuana possession with intent to distribute, and carrying a dangerous weapon stemming from yet another incident in October 2006.

The Chadwick brothers are charged with severely beating Justin Goodwin, 36, of Salem, early Saturday morning in an alleyway next to the Old Timer's Tavern on Rogers Street. Goodwin's family believes that the beating was a hate crime, and that he was targeted by up to six attackers because he is gay.

Goodwin suffered a shattered jaw, broken nose, broken eye socket and broken cheek bone in the beating. The Salem resident underwent nine hours of surgery on Sunday, according to his brother, David Kain of Peabody, and more surgery is planned, Kain said.

These guys are real winners. I hope they both fry.

Ms. Peep, will you be my mommy? I'll bring a note from my real mommy if you want. :)

Word. My dad served a little time basically for smoking some pot and knowing the wrong people, and being too stubborn to be useful to law enforcement. In my admittedly biased eyes, he came out a lot more hateful and fucked up than he went in.

Gloucester detectives have identified a third suspect in the bloody beating of a Salem man in the alley next to Old Timer's Tavern two weekends ago and are seeking his arrest.

Twenty-three-year-old John Curley-Brotman was picked out of a photo array by witnesses to the April 11 attack at the Rogers Street bar described by the victim's family as a hate crime, police said yesterday.

After getting a warrant for his arrest, Gloucester police contacted Boston police to help in the search for Curley-Brotman, whose last known location was in the Boston area.

The search for a new suspect comes as prosecutors from the Essex County District Attorney's office pursue indictments against the Gloucester brothers first arrested in connection with the incident.

Jonathan Chadwick, 23, of Western Avenue and William Chadwick, 21, of Elwell Street remain behind bars after a dangerousness hearing yesterday in Gloucester District Court was pushed to next Monday in anticipation of a potential grand jury indictment.

Until their dangerousness hearing, the Chadwicks are being held without bail.

Goodwin had come to the assistance of his sister, who told police she had been attacked in the bathroom of the bar by a group of woman, according to the police report.

Once in the alley, Goodwin was attacked by a group of men who came from the street in front of the building and began shouting gay slurs as they knocked him to the ground and began kicking him, according to witnesses.

Goodwin, who is gay, was transported to Beverly Hospital and then Beth Israel Medical Center in Boston, where he underwent hours of surgery to repair bones in his head broken during the attack, including a fractured jaw and eye socket.

Goodwin's sister and her boyfriend said there had been as many as five men who came into the alley to attack her brother.

In an interview with detectives after their arrest last week, both William and Jonathan Chadwick acknowledged being at the Old Timer's on the night of the incident, but denied participating in the beating.

Lawyers for a Salem man who was severely beaten outside a Rogers Street bar in April have filed a civil rights lawsuit against the bar, its owner and manager, and the five men who allegedly took part in the beating.

Justin Goodwin, 36, had gone to the Old Timer's Tavern on the evening of April 10 with his sister and her boyfriend, when both he and his sister were attacked.

Goodwin is openly gay, and he and his lawyers say that's why he was targeted by a group inside the bar. He was punched as he tried to shield his sister from being assaulted, then pushed by bar employees into an alley, where he was again set upon by the men.

Goodwin yelled for help and banged on the bar door, begging to be let back inside, as the men, yelling anti-gay slurs, beat and kicked him unconscious, the lawsuit says. Meanwhile, the bar's owners, managers and staff never called police. In fact, the lawsuit says, "staff members laughed at Mr. Goodwin." The lawsuit, filed late Tuesday in Salem Superior Court, accuses the bar; the bar's owner, Michael Favazza; and the manager, Jon Churchill, of negligence and violation of Goodwin's civil rights.

Brothers William and Jonathan Chadwick of Gloucester, John Curley-Brotman of West Roxbury, Mark Elwell and James Hiland are being sued on civil counts of assault and battery and violation of Goodwin's civil rights. Both the Chadwicks and Curley-Brotman are also facing criminal charges.

The suit seeks at least $100,000 in damages for medical bills, as well as pain and suffering and punitive damages. The bar's license was suspended by the city of Gloucester for 30 days as a result of the incident.

  • Mar 4, 2016

The man sought by police after officers observed an alleged drug deal Wednesday in a parking area off Maplewood Avenue was arrested following a traffic stop Thursday at the corner of Summer and Foster streets.

William J. Chadwick, 28, of 288 Western Ave., is facing a charge of distribution of a Class B drug, which the buyer who was caught by police identified as cocaine. Chadwick was charged Thursday on a warrant for his arrest issued by Gloucester District Court after being pulled over at 3:14 p.m.

Chadwick had driven away Wednesday after police observed another man, identified as Richard Williams, 51, of 33 Maplewood Ave., Apt. 313, get into Chadwick’s truck behind the 33 Maplewood condominium complex, then exit moments later after Chadwick had pulled forward by about 50 feet. Williams was then questioned by police and turned over two small packets of cocaine he said he had purchased from Chadwick.
