A Montville couple was arraigned in New London Superior Court this afternoon on charges that they deprived two children of food and neglected the girls, ages one and 14.

John Berkery, 35, the childrens' stepfather, and Christine M. Berkery, 32, their mother, are charged with two counts of risk of injury to a minor and two counts of cruelty to a person.

The couple allegedly rationed food for both children, kept the infant in her crib and failed to change her diaper regularly. According to an arrest warrant affidavit prepared by Officer David Radford II, he and a social worker arrived at the house in August to find the infant trying to drink from a bottle that contained a moldy substance and wearing a diaper that was "over full with feces and urine."

Montville police began investigating in August after the childrens' aunt reported that they "appeared to be starving" when they arrived for a visit in Maine. The older girl is currently living with the aunt, and the infant is in a foster home. The older girl told investigators that the couple had met on line and were married in May 2009. ... The teenager said her mother was often drunk and had begun locking up food after moving in with John Berkery.

The mother and stepfather each have four children of their own, but only those two were living in the home recently. In an earlier incident, a juvenile boy who was living in the home was charged with three counts of fourth-degree sexual assault and one count of risk of injury to a minor.

She has previous contacts with CPS in Maine and Rhode Island, but seems to do a "geographical cure" each time.
 
One would think CPS records should be the sort of things available in an inter-agency fashion. At least then there'd be a better list of priors when there's an investigation in a different state.

Affidavit: Starving baby ate own feces

Now this article adds more information to an already horrible situation.

Montville (WTNH) - News Channel 8 is learning more about the Montville couple accused of starving two children. According to the arrest affidavit, the one year old baby was playing in its dirty diaper and ate its own feces.

John Berkery, 35, and Christine Berkery, 32, are both charged with two counts of risk of injury to a minor and cruelty to persons. The children, 14 and one year old, are not John Berkery's kids.

According to affidavit, when the baby "tried to reach for more Cheerios, Christine would smack her hand."

The teenager also told police that one day she found her little sister "playing in her poop and she had eaten some of it." When she told her mother "she just laughed."

News Channel 8's Tina Detelj spoke exclusively to Christine's sister, Jennifer Tardy, who now has custody of the 14-year girl.

"I don't feel bad for my sister because she's had several chances, she's had several warnings and she's always chosen the guy over the children," Tardy said.

Court papers reveal that Christine was investigated for child abuse and neglect in Maine and Rhode Island before moving to Connecticut. Each time she moved to a new state and the cases never followed her.

"It's good, it's good because my sister not only ran from Maine but then she ran from Rhode Island," Tardy said.

And the guy Christine chose over her children this time: John Berkery. "My niece is scared to death of this guy," Tardy said. Tardy says he would make inappropriate comments to his stepdaughter. "He would say things to her like what a nice butt she had," Tardy said.

John and Christine have four children each; her oldest and youngest named as victims in the affidavit and her two middle children are in foster care after one of John's sons was accused of molesting them at their Montville home in July.

Tardy says the condition of the one year old is the same in which she found her older niece 13 years ago in Maine. A cycle repeated and now interrupted. "I'm so grateful for Connecticut because they didn't let her get away with it and I know she was getting ready to run again," Tardy said.

The Berkerys deny the charges.

And yet mom kept them there? She needed to have these kids taken from her, not as a lesson, but for their safety. She has no idea what it means to be a parent.

The middle two were taken away because of sexual improprieties by one of the penis' sons, and yet this woman still clung to him. She needs her her priorities straightened out, but not around the children. She has proven her ineptness at being a parent.

I banish her to the seventh circle of hell for betraying the trust of her children. They looked to her for safety and love and she denied them both of these.
 
What I don't understand is that if the state stepped in and removed the two middle children due to the molestation by the step-penis' son, why were the other two children allowed to remain in the home? Especially the youngest! Obviously the boy is not in the home since the article states that the 14 yo and 1 yo were the only children residing in the home currently, so they must have had reason enough to keep the two middle children in foster. Idk, I just never understood the purpose of removing only some of the children and leaving others behind. This situation is appalling and disgusting. I hope the two dirtbags get what they deserve and all the children heal completely! As far as his son's molesting, after the comments he made to his 14 yo step-daughter, I think there needs to be some serious investigations going on. Mighty coincidental that this jerkoff makes sexually lewd comments to one child AND his own young child is molesting other children. I wonder if there's a connection....?

Mommie Dearest has had DHS/CPS involved in at least two other states. The older child might not have been in her custody when the sexual abuse occurred and the younger one might not have been born. I am not making excuses but it looks like she has a long history of being a selfish fuckard so it's not like she gave a shit and would have done anything to protect her kids.

There should be an interstate data base for searching for child abuser. Most of them never actually get convicted of any crime and just move. In many states all they have to do is move to another county.

I hope this nasty bitch and her current sack of scum are convicted and spend lots of time in prison for what they did to these kids.

An Oakdale couple arrested on allegations they mistreated their two daughters accepted a nine-month prison sentence today, pleading no contest today to charges of reckless endangerment.

John J. Berkery, 36, and his wife, Christine M. Berkery , 33, entered no contest pleas to one count of first-degree reckless endangerment as part of a plea agreement with state prosecutors in New london Superior Court. The two have been in prison since January and are expected to be released after the proper paperwork is filed.

WATERFORD, Conn. (WTNH) - A custody battle continues to brew tonight after the state took a child out of what seemed to be an unfit home and placed her in foster care.

Now the child's biological parents say they want their kid back, but the foster parents won't let that happen without a fight.

A battle has been taken to court because police say a young girl was starved by her parents. Those parents now want her back now that they're out of jail but the foster parents are hoping to stop it.

Denise Mathieu is little Emma's foster parent. The then one-year-old had been taken from her mother Christine Berkery in Jan. 2010, when she and her husband John were arrested for allegedly starving her.

"She's doing great. She's a child that wouldn't look into your eyes nine months ago and she's a happy, well adjusted child now. She's thriving in her current environment," says Denise Mathieu, foster parent.

Mathieu was hoping to stop the Berkery's who a year later plead to a charge of reckless endangerment. In a statement John Berkery says "My wife and I took a deal earlier this year to get out of prison the fastest way we knew how in order to fight for our children back." Denise Mathieu says this is an issue of civil rights and believes Emma has not been represented appropriately by DCF or the child's attorney.

"This is a top down issue. We reached out to the commissioner's office back in May. Not only were we not taken seriously with our concerns, but we were provided with no response back from DCF," says Mathieu.

DCF told News 8 it is grateful for the love and devotion given to Emma, but if the court decides the mother is prepared to parent it will support that decision. Berkery says "This foster mother has grown attached to our child in the few months she had her and will stop at nothing to keep our child." The court ruled to reunite Emma with her parents Thursday afternoon.

"Our concern is that there's grave danger for this child, that this child's safety is being compromised," says Mathieu.

John Berkery didn't want to go on camera but told News 8 he and his wife were wrongly accused and wrongly arrested and that is why DCF now is trying to help them get their child back.

If they were wrongfully accused, the case would not have gone as far as it did.
DCF's goal is to keep families together. And Florida is the worst state for this. Baby abusers get their kids back just so they can kill them. Good going DCF!!!!

[MENTION=4295]Robynne[/MENTION] It is not DCF's "goal". It is a MANDATE by the Federal government. They will lose funding if they don't follow the Federal rules. Even when damned good workers feel something is wrong. they hare hogtied by regulations that demand the preservation of family. If parent's play the game, there is little workers can do.

I have several friends that foster. One just puked her guts out for 3 days because she had to send a child back to a mom that neither the caseworker or she felt was ready. But because the mom complied with all court orders and demands, they had to. Gut feelings and common sense have little place in a system that depends on paperwork. Fill it all out right, play the game, and you can get your kid back.
 
I have decided that the whole system is hopelessly screwed up. We are supposed to appreciate how well the system works when a verdict is handed down that is so flawed the jury has to run and hide. Now, we read more about parents who mistreat, abuse, starve and make sexual remarks to their kids and after 9 months, the kids get handed right back to them?

There is no fix for this beyond just eliminating the sub-human parents. There needs to be serious revival of vigilante justice.
