Montgomery County Fire/EMS responded Monday, April 6 shortly after 4 p.m. to for a traumatic injury.

After being transported to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, the 1-year-old child was pronounced dead and taken to the Western District Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy, according to deputies.
Jarron Shirk, 29, was charged with the following:
  • Felony homicide
  • Three counts of felony child endangerment
  • Three counts of misdemeanor allow access to firearm by children
  • Three counts of misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor
  • Three counts of felony abuse/neglect of a child

Shirk appeared in court virtually, and his wife arrived with their children, and both became visibly upset and started crying when they saw each other.

At one point, Shirk even shouted “no” as the murder charge was read.
Deputies say the child was rushed to a hospital Monday evening from the Walthall Street area in Elliston just after 4 p.m. with traumatic injuries and died.

That investigation led to the arrest of Shirk, who faces charges including felony homicide, three counts of child abuse and neglect, three counts of child endangerment, and charges related to allowing children access to a firearm.

Allegedly the child was left alone in a car and there was a gun in the car.
