South African teen wins 800 amid gender-test flap.

BERLIN (AP)—Facing questions about her gender, South African teenager Caster Semenya easily won the 800-meter gold medal Wednesday at the world championships.

Her dominating run came on the same day track and field’s ruling body said she was undergoing a gender test because of concerns she does not meet requirements to compete as a woman.

Semenya took the lead at the halfway mark and opened a commanding lead in the last 400 meters to win by a massive 2.45 seconds in a world-leading 1 minute, 55.45 seconds. Defending champion Janeth Jepkosgei was second and Jennifer Meadows of Britain was third in 1:57.93.

After crossing the line, Semenya dusted her shoulders with her hands. Semenya did not speak to reporters after the race or attend a news conference.

About three weeks ago, the international federation asked South African track and field authorities to conduct the verification test. Semenya had burst onto the scene by posting a world-leading time of 1:56.72 at the African junior championships in Maruitius.

Her dramatic improvement in times, muscular build and deep voice sparked speculation about her gender. Ideally, any dispute surrounding an athlete is dealt with before a major competition. But Semenya’s stunning rise from unknown teenage runner to the favorite in the 800 happened almost overnight. That meant the gender test—which takes several weeks—could not be completed in time.

Before the race, IAAF spokesman Nick Davies stressed this is a “medical issue, not an issue of cheating.” He said the “extremely complex” testing has begun. The process requires a physical medical evaluation and includes reports from a gynecologist, endocrinologist, psychologist, internal medicine specialist and gender expert.

South Africa team manager Phiwe Mlangeni-Tsholetsane would not confirm or deny that Semenya was having such a test.
“We entered Caster as a woman and we want to keep it that way,” Mlangeni-Tsholetsane said. “Our conscience is clear in terms of Caster. We have no reservations at all about that.”

Although medals will be awarded for the 800, the race remains under a cloud until the investigation is closed, and Semenya could be stripped of the gold depending on the test results, IAAF general secretary Pierre Weiss said.
“But today there is no proof and the benefit of doubt must always be in favor of the athlete,” Weiss said.
Semenya’s rivals said they tried not to dwell on the issue before the race.
“I’ve heard a lot of speculation, but all I could do was just keep a level head and go about my business,” Meadows said. “If none of it’s true, I feel very sorry for her.”

One thing not in doubt was Semenya’s outstanding run.
“Nobody else in the world can do that sort of time at the moment,” Meadows said. “She obviously took the race by storm.”

The world of athletics is reeling today after a claim that South African champion runner Caster Semenya is a hermaphrodite with no womb or ovaries.

A Sydney newspaper claims it has a world exclusive in revealing the very private information about the sex of the 18-year-old runner.

Quoting a source closely involved with the IAAF, the Sydney Daily Telegraph said Semenya had internal testes - male sexual organs which produce testosterone and which in turn produces muscle bulk, body hair and a deep voice.

Now, the paper said, the International Association of Athletics Federations is expected to disqualify Semenya from future events and advise an operation because the condition carries grave health risks.
[...]

But today the Sydney Daily Telegraph is quoting an anonymous source as saying that while there is 'certainly' evidence that Semenya is a hermaphrodite, the IAAF now has the whole of the African National Congress - and in fact the whole of South Africa - on their backs.

The source was quoted as saying: 'There's all sorts of scans you do. 'This is why it's complicated. In the past you used to do a gynaecological exam, blood test, chromosome test, whatever. That's why (the findings) were challenged, because it's not quite so simple.

'So what they do now is they do everything, and then they can say look, not only has she got this, she's got that and the other.

Shock claims: Caster Semenya celebrates her 800m victory in Berlin last month amid an international row over whether she is a man or a woman

'It's a joke': Caster posed for a glamorous photo-shoot in a South African magazine this week

18-year-old South African runner Caster Semenya (Or Castration Semen to those of us with the humor of a 10-year-old. YAY!) won the women's 800-meter last month in Berlin and had to basically put her vagina under a microscope to prove that she was born a female. The committee had reason to believe that Caster might have a case of the Lady GaGas. Well, Caster has decided to drag it up on the cover of South African magazine You, but said she only did it to have a little fun. And if you say otherwise, Caster will choke your ass with her Hulk-like claws.

Caster told the magazine, “I didn’t do this to prove a point but rather to have fun. I don’t give a damn what people say about me. I like me the way I am and who cares what other people say?â€￾

I'll give Caster a pat on the peen...I mean....back for that! Let Caster have a little drag fun. But she does look like a Wayans brother dressing up like a Williams sister dressing up like the Joker for an In Living Color skit. Not the best look.

And if You Magazine is in the business of giving feminine makeovers, they should tackle Khloe Kardashian and Brooke Hogan. Those two dudes need it more than Caster!

Ok, I watched that video, and I found a huge flaw with it. I was most definantly born a female, yet, my ring finger is longer than my index finger. Are there any other ladies out there with this? Or am I just truly an oddball??

Well if you are then I am....cuz my ring finger is longer too.....LOL!!!! Not by much.... I have never heard of such a thing......I am going to check every person now to see!!!

After that video came out, my boss comes rushing in one day to find out if the office girls' ring fingers are longer then their index finger. All of ours were (and believe me we are all women) and he laughed about it like a little school boy. It was super funny to him until his wife came in and her ring finger was longer then her index finger. All of a sudden it was a stupid video that didn't know what it was talking about. If you hold your hand with your fingers spread apart it looks like your index finger is longer then your ring finger =)

Sorry-a little off topic.

LOL!!.. Glad I'm not alone in this. I've never heard of such a thing either. I made my son come to me so I could check his hand lol. Apparently he's normal. :D

My ring finger is longer and I have a vagina and 5 kids. I had to get fixed or I would have 20. I am all woman.

Not so much lady.....

However, urine tests that measure male hormone levels have come back negative.

IAAF spokesman Nick Davies confirmed results of the tests were now known by the world governing body - but refused to go into further details.

"We have the final results from the specialist tests carried out in Germany," he said.

"These now need to be interpreted by a panel of experts drawn from the IAAF Medical Commission and some outside specialists as well.

"It is likely that we will be in a position to then discuss the results, in private, with Semenya, and decide on the course of action and any public announcement.

"Nothing will therefore be announced or confirmed until we are in a position to have the expert evaluation of the results, and discuss them with the athlete.

"We cannot give an exact timing but probably within the next couple of weeks."

The International Association of Athletics Federations did not confirm or deny Australian newspaper reports that the recently crowned women's world 800-meter champion has male and female sexual organs.

wow? hermaphrodite. that is soooo wild. can't even imagine.

i had a friend who had a baby like this and they "made" Precious a girl but as she has grown (She's 10 now like my oldest) she most definitely resembles a male facially and everything. :(

It's really a sad situation. I think unless it's medically warranted, I would wait until the child got old enough to choose whether they wanted to be a male or a female. It's too hard to tell as an infant what the personality or even the physical characteristics are going to be.

A landmark ruling concerning one of the most contested issues in sport -- gender identity -- has sent shockwaves through track and field.

On Wednesday, double Olympic champion Caster Semenya lost her appeal against the introduction of new rules regulating the testosterone levels for athletes with a difference in sex development (DSD).

That means the 28-year-old South African will now need to take medication to reduce her testosterone if she wants to compete internationally at events between 400m and the mile.

In its ruling the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) announced that its three-person panel had rejected the South African's challenge against athletics' governing body -- the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) -- "by majority" but did add that it had "serious concerns as to the future practical application" of the new rules.

Under the IAAF's policy, which will now come into effect on May 8, all DSD athletes, who are usually born with testes, would have to reduce their blood testosterone levels to below five nmol/L for a continuous period of at least six months, and maintain those levels continuously for the rest of their athletic career, if they want to compete internationally at middle-distance events.

A CAS statement said the panel was unable to establish that the DSD regulations were "invalid." Although the Swiss organization also found the policy was discriminatory to athletes with DSD, CAS said "such discrimination is a necessary, reasonable and proportionate means of achieving the IAAF's aim of preserving the integrity of female athletics in the Restricted Events."

It was a conclusion Semenya -- who has 30 days to appeal the CAS ruling to the Swiss Federal Tribunal -- described as disappointing.

"I know that the IAAF's regulations have always targeted me specifically. For a decade the IAAF has tried to slow me down, but this has actually made me stronger," Semenya said in a statement released by her representatives.

"The decision of the CAS will not hold me back. I will once again rise above and continue to inspire young women and athletes in South Africa and around the world."

Semenya's representatives said the 28-year-old was pleased that CAS had found the IAAF rules to be discriminatory against DSD athletes, but was disappointed that two of the arbitrators had deemed such discrimination to be necessary.

"Ms Semenya is reviewing the decision with her legal team and considering whether to file an appeal," the statement continued.
