An infant’s remains have been found in a waste plant in Florida, according to authorities.
In an April 3 news release obtained by PEOPLE, West Palm Beach Police said detectives recovered "body parts that appeared to be from an infant" at the Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County on April 2.
"Detectives believe these were human remains of an infant," Jachles said, per local media outlet WPTV, adding that detectives had been "pouring through mounds of garbage with rakes, with tools and by hand, looking for additional remains."
"As of midnight, no other remains were recovered other than the remains the workers had located," West Palm Beach Police spokesman Mike added.
The news release said detectives had spent "hours" combing through the garbage at the trash plant.
"The investigation is underway to identify the remains found," the release continued. "Detectives are reviewing surveillance video and movement of trucks at the facility and tipping floor to aid in the investigation. The medical examiners' staff took the remains for further examination."
