An admission to a church camp counselor led to charges filed against members of an Independence family accused of torturing and sexually abusing children.

Jackson County, Missouri, Circuit Court records filed on Monday, Aug. 18, but made public on Aug. 25, have revealed that Dianne, 47, Ryan, 47 and Maverick, 22, Nichols, of Independence, have been charged with child abuse.

A probable cause statement filed by the Independence Police Department revealed that in June 2023, law enforcement officials were called to check the welfare of several local children.
Investigators said they learned that a victim had disclosed to counselors at her church camp that she had been sexually abused for years.
Law enforcement officials said they followed up and found that during an interview with the Child Protection Center, the victim indicated Maverick had sexually abused her for years.

Investigators noted that interviews with all the children involved indicated they were kept in heinous living conditions. They found the children were kept under strict surveillance by Dianne and Ryan and occasionally Maverick.
Independence Police said they found that the children’s necessities, even down to their bathroom breaks, were controlled by the three. Discipline included starvation for periods of up to six days as well as extreme physical abuse. They would be forced to write Bible verses in exchange for food.
During an interview after her arrest, law enforcement officials said Dianne claimed the children were troubled due to past trauma. She said her disciplinary practices were the result of their behavioral issues and denied all allegations of mistreatment.

Investigators noted that Maverick and Ryan declined to answer any questions. As a result, Dianne and Ryan have both been charged with eight counts each of child abuse. Maverick faces charges of sodomy in the second degree, attempted sodomy in the first degree and two counts of attempted rape in the first degree.
