Many people in Houston land on both sides of the fence after Memorial High School students this week surfaced in viral photos wearing basketball jerseys with questionable accessories for spirit week.

The school allowed students to wear jerseys for one of their approved theme days on Tuesday, but some student made "inappropriate" and unapproved additions, the district said in a prepared statement.

The collection of photos shared on social media, which has received 17,000 're-tweets' and 48,000 'likes,' shows the students wearing durags, fake tattoos and gold chains as part of their attire.

The school canceled the remaining themed days for spirit week. Some people said they didn't find the attire offensive at all, and equated it to "kids just having fun."

I certainly don't think it's a good idea, but, on the other hand, thugs shouldn't be considered actual representatives of the black community since thugs come in all races, so I don't think thugs, per se, need to be off limits for ridicule.

Just to see what the results would be, I searched "Thug" images on Google, Bing Yahoo! and DuckDuckGo.

All 4 come up with what these kids dressed up as. It's not the kids, it's society and it's those who apply labels to themselves.
