HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WCHS) — Federal prosecutors said a man who was living at a homeless facility in Charleston and was looking at child pornography on his laptop after a previous child porn conviction has been sentenced to prison.
James Gipson, 59, was sentenced Monday to 11 years and two months in prison to be followed by a lifetime of supervised release for possession of child porn and a violation of supervised release, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia.
On April 25, 2020, staff at the homeless facility saw Gipson in a common area looking at child porn on his laptop. Police were called and the laptop was examined, with a forensic analysis discovering more than 300 child porn images, prosecutors said.
The news release said Gipson admitted the laptop was his and that he knew he shouldn’t have possessed it.
Gipson was previously convicted of possession of child porn in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia. In 2012, he was sentenced to 10 years and six months in prison and placed on lifetime supervised release.
