Earlier this year Lydia Toscano’s parents granted her wish for a sister — a four-legged one — who shared a common trait.

Adopted as an infant, Lydia, now 7, got the word early on about her origins, said her mother, Sondra Toscano, a support magistrate in Nassau County family court. A dog lover herself with three earlier rescues in their Nassau home, Toscano knew her only child would appreciate that “she wasn’t the only adopted person in the house.”

In April, the two came across an entry on the website of Posh Pets Rescue, which runs the Long Beach animal shelter, for Venus, a 6-year-old Maltese-Yorkie mix rescued in January from a shuttered Missouri puppy mill.

“We fell in love. Her soulful eyes called out to us even through a photograph,” Toscano wrote in a statement she submitted to the Petco Foundation’s sixth annual Holiday Wishes campaign, which highlights stories of how adopted pets can change lives for the better. Their tale was one of 51 honored in the foundation's first round of funding, getting $5,000 for the rescue and $50 for the family to spend at the pet store.

Now, Posh Pets could get $25,000 more if this Long Island love story is the top vote-getter in the foundation's People’s Choice Award. Voting is open to the public through 1 p.m. Wednesday at petcofoundation.org/vote. There are two $10,000 and two $5,000 grants for the rest of the top five. The results will be revealed before Christmas.

"She wanted to adopt a dog because she's adopted," Toscano said in an interview. "And she wanted a special connection with someone — or something."

If you could all take a moment to vote for Posh Pets I would really appreciate it. Four of my fur babies have come from this rescue.

I saw a program years ago with a story along a similar line - a deaf woman was checking out her local shelter looking for a puppy that she could adopt and train as a "hearing dog" for her, especially at home use, where the dog could alert her to the doorbell, her TTY/TDY (a deaf person's typeable "telephone"), the tea kettle or even intruders.
As she was walking towards the puppy room, she was going down a long aisle of slightly older caged dogs, when she saw a sign on one cage that stopped her in her tracks.
The sign said "Please love me, I am deaf and no one wants me".
She never got to the puppy room, she and the dog took one look at one another, and she knew this was meant to be, and adopted the dog on the spot.
The show had interviewed her six months after the adoption, and the bond between the two was so loving and deep, I teared up. She admitted that this dog couldn't help her with the service needs that she first thought she was looking for, but had made up for that and more with it's unconditional love, how quickly it took to learning sign language, and how well it obeyed her every command, instantly, without the need for her ever having give the command twice (as nearly ALL of us dog owners have to do from time to time, just like with kids).
She said she felt so grateful to have found a pet who she can understand how it's minds works because they share deafness, and that she also knows that the dog would have soon been destroyed from lack of interest had she gone on to that puppy room that she never saw.

ETA: Just voted Posh Pets Rescue FTW!

I love that story.

Here is a picture of my deaf horse "Dutch" he was by far the easiest horse I have ever trained.
Once he understood I was communicating with him, he was 100% focused on me.

I ended up with him because no one wanted a deaf horse so I took him into my rescue.
