Murder and first-degree child abuse charges were authorized against Kelly Ballinger, 33, and Matthew Longenecker, 34, in Kalamazoo County District Court Tuesday, July 11. Both charges are felonies punishable by up to life in prison.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety was called at 5:11 a.m. Sunday, July 9, to a home on Mount Olivet Road on a report of a child not breathing. The first officer to arrive began CPR on the child and CPR continued for more than 50 minutes. Officers were unable to revive the child who, police say, appeared to have suffered an unknown physical trauma.

Investigators learned the 4-year-old victim, identified in court by the initials "D.T.," had been getting restrained at night for the last two weeks [....]

the girl had been wrapped in blankets to form a swaddle, then wrapped in duct tape. At times her face was covered. She was sent to bed and was unable to move until she was unwrapped the following day. When Ballinger, the victim's mother, found her July 9, her head was still covered, Goodell testified.

Kelly Ballinger and Matthew Longenecker admitted to doing this, and detectives also found text messages on the couple's cell phones that corroborated the evidence. The girl's body was covered in numerous bruises and lacerations and her manner of death has been ruled a homicide, Goodell said.

Two other children in the home were taken into protective custody by Child Protective Services.

Ballinger and Longenecker were arraigned Tuesday afternoon. Both are scheduled to be back in court Aug. 1 for preliminary examinations. Bond was denied.

A Kalamazoo couple who allegedly wrapped their four-year-old daughter in a blanket and duct tape to keep her from getting out of bed, leading to the child's death, has been bound over to be tried on charges of murder and first-degree child abuse.

Matthew Longnecker, 34, and his fiance Kelly Ballinger, 33, now also face methamphetamine charges following Monday's preliminary hearing.

Investigators say they were using the drug July 9, the night Desaray Thompson died.

Detectives testified that Ballinger admitted they bound the girl tight enough so she did not have enough breath to scream. They also said Ballinger ignored pleas from the girl the night she died.

Pathologists said that Desaray died from asphyxia and hypothermia.

Longnecker and Ballinger could get life in prison without parole if convicted.

Both are being held without bond.

I'll assume she's sober in prison so even if she blames the drugs for what happened, she is still is capable of vanity and the ability to groom herself. A jury convicted Matthew Longenecker Wednesday of first-degree murder and first-degree child abuse in the asphyxiation death of Desaray Thompson. A separate jury found Kelly Ballinger guilty of involuntary manslaughter and first-degree child abuse in her daughter's July death. They both were convicted of possession of meth.

Oh. My. God. I wish I didn’t click the link. Stuff of nightmares. I live in this area. This is actually 5 min away from me. My daughters father and I are very involved with the schools here, and if my daughter was just 2 years younger, this little angel may have been in my daughters class. I could NOT imagine ignoring that pitiful sorrowful defeated bruised up face. That poor poor little girl. Just five min away from me she suffered and died. I just can’t. So fucking sad.
 
Desaray Thompson, 4, died in July 2017 from asphyxiation, while her mom, Kelly Ballinger, and her fiance', Matthew Longenecker, smoked methamphetamine, according to prosecutors.

Both Ballinger and Longenecker were convicted of their crimes on March 28. Ballinger was convicted of Involuntary Manslaughter, Child Abuse, 1st degree and Possession of Methamphetamine. Longenecker was convicted of Murder, 1st degree, Child Abuse, 1st degree and Possession of Methamphetamine.

Ballinger was sentenced first. She was sentenced to five to 15 years in prison for Involuntary Manslaughter and 21 1/4 to 50 years for Child Abuse. The judge said that he did not find that she had been remorseful over the death of Thompson.
