The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner said in the autopsy report that Perry also drowned in “the heated end of his pool,” but that it was a secondary factor in his Oct. 28 death, deemed an accident.

People close to Perry told investigators that he was undergoing ketamine infusion therapy, an experimental treatment used to treat depression and anxiety. But the medical examiner said the levels of ketamine in Perry’s body were in the range used for general anesthesia during surgery, and that his last treatment 1 1/2 weeks earlier wouldn’t explain those levels. The drug is typically metabolized in a matter of hours.

The report says coronary artery disease and buprenorphine, which is used to treat opioid use disorder, also contributed.

The amount of ketamine detected “would be enough to make him lose consciousness and lose his posture and his ability to keep himself above the water,” said Dr. Andrew Stolbach, a medical toxicologist with Johns Hopkins Medicine who reviewed the autopsy report at the request of The Associated Press.

'When nurses or companions are in someone's home, they do not have the same permissions as in a [rehab] institution. They cannot frisk visitors for drugs.'

Matthew Perry’s assistant allegedly injected him more than 20 times with ketamine in the four days before he died, according to California prosecutors who have brought charges against five people in connection with his death.

Two doctors, an acquaintance and a woman known as the “ketamine queen” are among those charged with providing the actor with the ketamine in September and October last year.

One doctor named in an indictment filed on Wednesday said in a text message that he “wondere[d] how much this moron will pay” for the drugs.

Some allegedly involved in distributing the drugs referred to vials of ketamine using code words such as “Dr Pepper”, “cans” and “bots”, the prosecutors said.

Salvador Plasencia, a doctor at an urgent care centre, and Jasveen Sangha, a woman prosecutors said was known as the “ketamine queen”, were arrested on Thursday and are accused of supplying drugs to Perry, who was found dead aged 54 at his LA home last year.

A grand jury indictment unsealed on Thursday said the two people worked to procure ketamine despite knowing that he had a history of drug abuse.

Prosecutors named Perry’s assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, an acquaintance named Erik Fleming and another doctor, Mark Chavez, as co-conspirators in an “underground criminal network responsible for distributing [a] large quantity of ketamine to Perry and others”.

US attorney Martin Estrada said in a press briefing on Thursday that the defendants “took advantage of Mr Perry’s addiction issues,” adding: “They knew what they were doing was wrong”.

The so-called “Ketamine Queen of Los Angeles” has been charged with providing the ketamine that caused the overdose deaths of Matthew Perry and another man, according to the feds.

Jasveen Sangha, 41, earned herself the notorious nickname for allegedly selling ketamine and meth out of her North Hollywood “stash house” going back to as early as June 14, 2019, according to a California federal indictment made public Thursday.

Sangha continued to peddle the dangerous drugs until she was busted on March 19 for selling meth in a prior unrelated case. She had been out on $100,000 bond since March, court records show.

The drug queen used her North Hollywood home to “store, package, and distribute narcotics, including providing ketamine to co-conspirator [Erik] Fleming so that co-conspirator Fleming could sell it to Victim M.P.,” the indictment said, referring to Matthew Perry.

Mark Chavez pleaded guilty to one count of conspiring to distribute ketamine in federal court in Los Angeles at a 11 a.m. pacific hearing on Wednesday, Oct. 2, according to reports from the Associated Press, Deadline and Fox 11.


Chavez, who is free on $50,000 bond, exited the courtroom after entering his plea and will be sentenced at a later date. He faces up to 10 years in prison.

In his plea agreement, previously obtained by PEOPLE, Chavez, who ran a ketamine clinic, said he sold the drug to Dr. Salvador Plasencia, one of the other defendants in the case, who is accused of then selling the ketamine to Perry's assistant Kenneth Iwamasa.

Plasencia has pleaded not guilty to several charges in connection with the case, while Iwamasa previously pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine causing death.

Perry died on Oct. 28, 2023 from "acute effects of ketamine."
