Melbourne police responded to a 911 call regarding an infant found unresponsive and not breathing just after 11 a.m. on June 10. The baby, just six weeks old, was transported to the hospital but was pronounced dead before noon.
Edrick Lamar Davis, 25, told police the baby had no known medical issues or injuries that could explain his sudden death. In his interview, Davis told police he was feeding his child for about 15 minutes until the boy fell asleep. After that, the man says he laid the baby down and got into the shower.
When Davis returned to the room, he said he found the infant unresponsive and not breathing. That's when he called 911 and administered rescue breaths until paramedics arrived, the affidavit reads.
The next day, an autopsy confirmed the baby's death was a homicide caused by multiple blunt force trauma. According to records, the infant had multiple internal injuries, bruising on the back of his head, a brain hemorrhage, ocular nerve hemorrhages, and fractures to the clavicle, tibia, ribs and jawbone.
These serious injuries occurred in a forceful and intentional manner just before death, the medical examiner said.
In addition, the doctor says they found older rib fractures that were in the process of healing and a bruise in the middle of the child's neck that was an indicator of prior abuse.
When prompted with the results of the autopsy, Davis claimed he "accidentally" struck the child's head on the door frame, while carrying the 6-week-old in his arms. In addition, the affidavit says Davis claimed he "forcefully hit the back of (the child's) head with his knee while trying to prevent him from falling out of his arms."
More than a week later, Davis met with officials to provide them with the baby's medical records and, according to the affidavit, admitted to causing the child's death.
Davis says he forcefully struck the back of the infant's head with his knee at least two times because the child was fussy and crying, and it was causing him to become stressed. The affidavit says the man still claims the act was unintentional but describes the detailed manner in which he slammed the child down into his knee.
The man's admission was documented in an apology letter in which he states he lost control due to stress and was not in his right mind.
