A father jumped in front of an oncoming No. 4 train in the Bronx with his 5-year-old daughter Monday morning in a suicide attempt, killing himself and severely injuring the child, police said.

The incident happened around 8 a.m. at the Kingsbridge Road station, authorities said.

The 45-year-old man, whose identity was not immediately released, leaped in front of a southbound No. 4 train with his daughter in his arms before horrified straphangers.

Emergency responders pronounced the man dead at the scene, while his daughter was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center with severe, but non-life threatening, injuries.

Two Good Samaritans suffered minor injuries when they tried to help the little girl after the train had come to a stop, police said.

Damn, how incredibly lucky she survived. Such a terrible shitty thing for her father to have done. Lifetime of trauma.

Gotta wonder if that gigantic ass backpack somehow shielded her. Frankly I'm shocked she wasn't drenched in his blood, if not her own. Maybe it was slowing to a stop? That's the only way my brain can wrap around her surviving this.

[Quote[The Bronx mom whose 5-year-old girl narrowly survived her suicidal father’s leap in front of a train Monday morning made a desperate run from the family’s home to the nearby subway station when she suspected something was wrong, relatives said.

Niurka Caraballo received a troubling phone call from Fernando Balbuena shortly after he left their Grand Concourse apartment with their daughter, Ferni Balbuena, around 8 a.m. this morning, said Luis Sanchez, the godfather of the couple’s son.

“She couldn’t understand what he was saying. It wasn’t coming through,” said Sanchez. “But she got the feeling that something was very, very wrong.”[/Quote]

Chilling last words of dad who jumped in front of train with daughter in arms
A distraught Bronx dad said the final words “With God, with God, with God, here comes the train” before jumping in front of a subway car while holding his 5-year-old daughter, who miraculously survived, his wife revealed Tuesday.

Fernando Balbuena, 45, spoke those chilling last words in Spanish — “Con dios, con dios, con dios que alli viene el tren” — to wife Niurka Caraballo in a phone conversation that sent her running out of the couple’s Grand Concourse home to the nearby Kingsbridge Road station Monday morning, only to find it was too late.
