SAYREVILLE, N.J. (AP) — A 9-year-old boy was found dead inside a burning car after his father doused the vehicle with gasoline and set it on fire at a New Jersey high school following a domestic dispute at their family home, authorities said.

Manuel Rivera, 43, of Sayreville was charged with aggravated arson, according to a news release from the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, and additional charges were expected. It was not known Friday if Rivera had retained an attorney.

Sayreville police went to the family’s home around 10:45 p.m. Thursday and were told Rivera had left the residence with the boy, whose name was not released. Around that same time, a fire was reported in the area of Sayreville War Memorial High School.

When police arrived at the school, they found Rivera next to the burning car authorities said he had doused with gasoline. He had burns to his body and a self-inflicted wound and was taken to a hospital.

The New Jersey man charged with murdering his young son and torching the boy’s body in a school parking lot sent a disturbing video to his wife before attempting to take his own life, according to reports.
Manuel Rivera, 43, allegedly owned up to the crime and apologized to his wife in a video message sent just before he carried out the heinous act. He then told her they’d see each other in the afterlife and asked for his remains to be cremated, according to police documents obtained by News 12.
Rivera also left a suicide note at home with a similar message.

“This is how it ends for me and [their son]. I know we couldn’t live without each other. Today is the day that death does us part,” the note read, according to Patch.
Rivera is charged with first-degree murder, second-degree desecration of human remains, aggravated arson, and endangering the welfare of a child.

A vigil was held for him at the school on Saturday night.

He could have lived just fine without you in his life.
Rivera, however, who had been inside the burning vehicle and suffered burns throughout his body and a laceration around his neck, was able to get out of the car and remained near the vehicle as it burned before police officers and firefighters arrived. He remains in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.

He made no attempt to rescue his son from inside the burning car, court documents state.

Manuel Rivera, 43, also sent a video apologizing to his family for his actions and asking for him and his son to be cremated, adding he will see other family in the afterlife.

They should not be parted, Manuel needs to be thrown in a car, lit on fire till he burns to death or dies from inhalation.
