Tracey Hardy kept lying to the police.
A man referenced as "John" thought that his X-girlfriend was improperly refusing to let him see their son, and worse, he could not find evidence that the child even existed any more. Horrified that something may have happened to his son, he called the police for help in 2017, placing a missing child report after not having seen the boy since 2015.
But when the police contacted Tracey Hardy, from Macclesfield, in Cheshire, England, she denied everything. Mistaken identity, she claimed. She denied ever having the little boy John was referencing, even denying knowing who her X-boyfriend was. When asked about the custody-related papers she had been receiving in the mail, she claimed that she'd been to the authorities several times trying to clear up this confusion.
John had given police a picture he had of himself, Tracey, and the little boy playing together during one of the few visitations he had been afforded. When police showed her the picture, Tracey claimed that she could not remember who the little boy was.
As the police investigation proceeded, Tracey Hardy would just not stop lying, continuing to tell lie-after-lie to everyone.
The one and only bit of truth that came from her mouth was, in fact, that she had never had the little boy.
It was only when police interviewed her 16-year-old daughter that they discovered the truth about the child. The boy John had become close to was actually the son of a family friend. It turned out that Tracey Hardy had borrowed the child specifically for the purpose of staging those few, fake visitations with John.
Tracey Hardy had pretended to be pregnant in phone calls with John, then called him and pretended to have had his baby boy, borrowed this unknowing friend's child for fake "visitations", collected money from the X, and then tried to cut contact when continuing the lie became untenable.
When she finally admitted to the ruse, she said it was primarily for revenge, due to her hatred at having been dumped.
For this psychological torture and her lies, she was jailed for a big fat 2 years. This was around April of 2018. So, she should be out by now.
In an interview, "John" stated:
'I can't really describe it and if I do describe it I'm sort of reliving that emotion and I never want to do that again so I cant really describe how devastating it was,' he said.
'It's a completely horrible feeling. I still see his little face sometimes in my memory and that sort of brings me down a little bit.
'My only way round it is to not think about it at all and I never wanted to stop thinking about it, but that's unfortunately what I've got to do.'
The duped non-father was having some psychological trouble letting go. He's even sent contact to the child's actual family, saying he's hoping for the best for their son, and wondering if he could visit the child sometime. John Hardy is not his real name and he prefers to remain anonymous.
