Ethan Sweeney, 22, allegedly admitted to the incident during a police interview on Dec. 2.
On Tuesday, Nov. 25 at about midnight, police were dispatched to the WellSpan York Hospital for a three-month-old child that was brought to the emergency department with serious injuries. The child had been brought in by Sweeney and his girlfriend at about 10:38 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 24, police said.
Officers noticed visible bruising on the child's face that extended from the forehead to the lower cheek. Medical staff told police that the child also sustained brain bleeding a swelling. The child was flown to Penn State Hershey Medical Center for further emergency care, police said.
On Dec. 2, police interviewed Sweeney, where he allegedly admitted to striking his son in the face with his hand multiple times, causing the injuries. He also allegedly confessed to cupping his hand over the child's nose and mouth to try and get him to stop crying.
Based on the police investigation, Sweeney now faces the following charges:
- 2 counts of aggravated assault
- Simple assault
- Endangering welfare of children
- Recklessly endangering another person
- Strangulation
