"George David Herrin, 85, died at Merit Heath Hospital in Madison Monday morning, according to Madison County Coroner Alex Breeland.

Herrin was sitting in his car outside of Canton Estates when multiple shots were fired at him, Breeland said. It initially appears one bullet struck Herrin but a full autopsy will be conducted at the crime lab in Pearl.

Breeland declined to say where Herrin was shot.

The 911 call came in at 11:17 Sunday night. Herrin died at 12:31 a.m. Monday.

Herrin had a holster but Breeland could not say whether or not he was armed. The shooting was "absolutely a homicide," he said.

Information on a suspect was not immediately available Monday morning. Heath Hall, spokesperson for the Madison County Sheriff's Department, could not be reached for comment."

Most disturbing is the fact that he still needed a job, especially a dangerous job, at age 85. I wonder if he ran out of money and had to come out of retirement. Now I can understand that many retirees go out and get part time jobs because they don't want to just lay around on their ass and go swiftly downhill. I would probably do part time, maybe volunteer work and continue my daily workout routine. But at age 85, I would not want to be a security guard.
