Believing her 46-year-old disabled son was “on his way out” anyway a mother left her son on the floor to die after he fell from his wheelchair days earlier.

Cheryl Christensen, 60, is charged with negligently subjecting an at-risk individual to abuse causing death, as well as misdemeanor obstructing an officer and disorderly conduct.

Relatives requested a welfare check after becoming concerned about the man's well-being. The man had suffered physical and brain injuries when he was struck by a vehicle at age 14; Christensen served as his caregiver.

Christensen told police that the victim had fallen out of bed several days prior. He was screaming in pain and she believed he had broken bones.

She couldn’t get him back into his wheelchair, so she dragged him to the bathroom and gave him pills to help ease the pain.

Christensen told police that she provided the victim with water and juice for around four days before she claimed that he began refusing sustenance. Christensen said that she didn’t call for help because she did not want her son to die in a hospital, that she wanted him to die peacefully.

Other relatives said he had visited a doctor the previous month and had been given a clean bill of health.
Inside the home, police noticed a red line painted on the floor, a red cross painted across the television and red paint splattered on the walls. All the doors were marked with red X’s.

Christensen explained the red paint by saying “the home had a mad energy to it.” She added that she believed there were possibly demons in the house. Relatives told police they were worried about the victim because they had not seen or heard from him in a while and due to Christensen’s mental health issues. She had apparently been sending significant sums of money to a preacher in Texas that she had been following on YouTube.

I think she is lying about him falling @Muriel Schwenck

Sad situation for the family. Woman had to raise this invalid since age 14 when the kids life, and in turn the familys life, was ruined forever. Over 30 years dealing with that, almost not surprising she ended up ending it like this.

Curious if she did the crosses and shit to try and claim crazy after the fact, or if she was legit a nutter.

One thing is for sure, her apparent assertion that he died comfortable at home vs a hospital is clearly a heavy load of shit. Hopefully she's telling the truth about loading him with pain pills and he at least didnt suffer long, but i have doubts.

@Alf

Why would the concerned relatives allow her to be his caregiver:( if she was nuts.
I have a couple of wild-ass guesses. First, she would do it for what Social Security was providing, not leaving the family out of pocket for his care. Second, her meds may have stopped working and the cheese fell off her cracker when they did . . . 20 years ago. But I'm wildly speculating.

Having a Special Needs kid, I can tell you firsthand that "concerned relatives" don't really want any part of what you're going through. You pray to God that the kid doesn't outlive you, because no one else will ever love your child or care for your child the way you do. She's been caring for her kid, probably alone, for 32 years. She's worn out - look at her. That's an OLD 60. My 86yo Grammy looks younger! I'm sure he did fall. I'm sure she couldn't pick him up. I bet those "concerned relatives" were too busy or too far to come help her. She should have called an ambulance. But then, if she really did think he was going to pass, I know my kid would rather be home with me. But I would've called an ambulance.

Sounds like they got a hefty settlement from the accident and that she decided to spend it on a TV preacher instead of the care her son needed. If she could afford to send large sums of money to a con artist, she could've afforded to pay someone to come help her. If it appeared her mental illness was preventing her from caring properly for her son, relatives should've contacted CPS. I can't imagine just ignoring the situation until he died.

@Satanica

I wish there was more oversight to ensure that the carer and/or payee is actually capable of caring for a person with special needs.

It is draining and hard but bi one can be excused for failing in their duty to provide the care they are essentially being paid to do.

@elmgems

My late brother got MS at 14 (I am 3 years younger than him) and his symptoms were very severe.

My mother was the main one to care for him my father just could not or would not help my mother.

I hope you have people around to support and offer you a respite when you need it.

I have grown up around the system, personal things and all. Honestly brother, I think that she could have done something, even dropped him at a hospital, maybe faced some short charges if that. Nah, what she did wasn't acceptable and she needs to be locked up. Blood is on her hands. And I agree that she probably didn't do anything for his pain.

Racine County Case Number 2020CF001379 State Of Wisconsin vs. Cheryl A Christensen

All charges against Cheryl A Christensen in this case have been dismissed. These charges were not proven and have no legal effect. Cheryl A Christensen is presumed innocent.

This is just crazy...

She was murdered by her other son....

A Racine woman previously charged with negligently causing her disabled son’s death has been identified as the victim in a homicide case that began as a house fire investigation, authorities revealed Friday. Her death is connected to the police shooting at Cliffside Park in Caledonia this week.
Cheryl Christensen, 64, was found dead Monday after firefighters extinguished a blaze at her home in the 2600 block of W. Crescent St. Initially thought to be a fire-related death, an autopsy conducted Wednesday revealed Christensen had been shot multiple times before the fire started.

Christensen had been previously been at the Mendota Mental Health Institute after being found incompetent to stand trial for the second time in January. She in court May 10th and scheduled to face trial in August for allegedly allowing her 46-year-old disabled son to die on a bathroom floor after a fall in October 2020.
The case took a turn Wednesday morning when police responded to a call about a man down at Cliffside Park in nearby Caledonia. The situation escalated into a tactical response, resulting in the death of a 37-year-old male with connections to Christensen’s address.

Death of Suspect: Two days later, her 37-year-old son—the brother of the disabled man who died in 2020—was fatally shot by police during an armed confrontation at Cliffside Park in Caledonia. Law enforcement confirmed the two incidents were connected
