Investigators today were trying to figure out what led to the shootings of two Montgomery County doctors that left one dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and the other in critical condition at a local hospital.
Dr. Brian Turley, 41, shot himself Sunday night after he told a friend that he shot a man coming from his estranged wife's house in the Bentwater subdivision near Lake Conroe, sheriff's officials said.
Investigators believe Turley shot Dr. Matthew John Glaser, 41, who remained in critical condition at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston today, said Montgomery County Sheriff's Lt. J. E. Sclider.
The shootings occurred Sunday night within about a half hour of each other, officials said.
Sclider declined to discuss the relationship between the doctors and Turley's estranged wife or the motive behind the shootings because the investigation is ongoing.
Turley was a radiologist and so is Glaser. Turley had been a staff physician at Conroe Regional Medical Center since 1997, said Tom Schoffelman, spokesman for the hospital.
Glaser has a private practice in Conroe and at one time worked at the medical center, according to the Texas Medical Board's Web site. No listing could be found for his practice.
Neither doctor had any complaints or disciplinary action, according to the Texas Medical Board.
Sheriff's officials said they received a call at 10:42 p.m. Sunday from security at the Bentwater subdivision. The caller said a man, who turned out to be Glaser, came to the guard station for help after being shot, Sclider said. Glaser told officers with the Montgomery Police Department that he had been shot by Turley.
Sclider said Glaser, who drove to the security station, said Turley had fired several shots at him. Glaser was shot once in the left chest area and was taken by helicopter ambulance to the hospital, Sclider said.
Authorities began searching the area for Turley, but did not locate him, Sclider said. Then, about 11:14 p.m., sheriff's officials responded to a call on Star Violet Court in The Woodlands. The woman who lived at the house told deputies that Turley arrived unannounced and said he shot at someone but did not know if he had hit the person, officials said.
Turley then demanded his friend's car keys. When she refused, he pulled out a handgun and shot himself once in the head, officials said. He was transported to Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Sheriff's detectives collected shell casings at both locations and it appears the same handgun was used at both places, Sclider said.
Debbie Nelson, office manager at Turley's private Conroe practice, said the doctor's death has shaken staffers, but they continue to see patients.
''It's just been real hard for us to talk about," Nelson said today. "He was a real nice man and a caring doctor. It's a great loss to the community."
She said Turley has two young children. She said she did not know how long he and his wife had been estranged because he did not talk about his personal life.
Sclider said Turley and his wife have been separated for several years. Montgomery County court records show the couple filed for divorce in 2006.
Anyone with information about the shootings is asked to call the Montgomery County Sheriff's detective division at 936-760-5876 or Montgomery County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-392-7867.
