Horrific photos of dog fighting in Kyrgyzstan have revealed the sport still attracts an enthusiastic audience, including small children, to watch yelping beasts rip chunks out of each other.

The barbarous bouts were staged at an arena in the capital city of Bishkek on Sunday with owners marshalling their colossal Central Asian Shepherds in bloody fights.
Many of the spectators, including children, filmed the fights on their smartphones with white fur soon turning blood red.

The huge dogs, weighing up to 220lbs and known locally as Alabai, are pitted against each other to test their worthiness, breeders claim.

Breeders say they must prove the dogs' worth to potential buyers who risk having their livestock decimated by wolves and foxes if they pick the wrong animal.

Though they are severely bloodied in the scraps, the dogs do not fight to the death but are hauled off each other once the dominant animal has made itself known.
