On May 9, 2025, police said that a Sullivan County Grand Jury charged Dexter Montgomery with first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse.

Police said that on December 19, 2023, Bristol, Tennessee, officers responded to Godsey Road for an unresponsive three-year-old.

The child was transported to the East Tennessee Children's Hospital, where the child died, police added.

BTPD added that due to the suspicious nature of the death, an autopsy was conducted, and after an investigation, it was determined it was a homicide.
