The Des Moines Police Department announced Friday an arrest in the death of a 15-month-old Des Moines boy.
According to police, officers were called to MercyOne Hospital to investigate the death of Tremir Matthews on June 15. Police said the child had been transported by family members to the hospital and apparently had been deceased for some time. According to police, Matthews had been left in the care of 28-year-old Brandon Davon Greenup while the child’s mother went to work.
“During the early morning hours, Greenup was aware that the child was having difficulty breathing, and that later the child was limp and unresponsive. Greenup did not seek medical attention for the child,” police said in a news release.
Police said an autopsy revealed trauma consistent with injuries that would require immediate medical attention.
The Polk County Attorney’s Office approved charges on June 17, and Greenup was located by officers and charged with first-degree murder in the case.
