The horse, named MC Hammer, was taken to a veterinarian on Tuesday with symptoms of colic, according to a statement released by the department.

The horse had been “left tied in his stall following a duty assignment the previous afternoon,” the department said.

“The Denver Police Department is currently conducting an Internal Affairs investigation into this incident to determine if there was any negligence by Department personnel,” officials said.

MC Hammer was 10 years old and had been with the Mounted Patrol Unit since November, according to the department.
I'm going to guess the horse was tied in his stall with hay and no way to get water.

I don't see a point in tying a horse to something when they are already in a stall?

Don't horses with colic try to go down? Were they trying to keep him up (in a dumb way)?

Its very common to tie a horse in its stall to untack and brush. Its also common to hang a hay bag so the horse will have something to nibble on and not fidget around.
If the officer or attendant forgot to untie the horse and it stood there eating dry hay with no water (out of reach because of the tie) then colic makes sense. I'm just guessing. The horse was only 10 years old. That's really only midlife or less. My horses have a pasture mate that is 37. but average is around 25 to 30

Maybe there was no abuse at all?
Maybe this is all standard when a police mount dies? 10 seems young but things happen even to a 10 yo horse.

Yeah I understand the tying for grooming and ferrier work, but I thought they left him tied up for an extended period of time. That part didn't make sense to me. I agree 10 years is pretty young. I guess he could have had an obstruction or something. I'm glad they are looking into it.

That's what it sounded like to me.
Maybe that's what happened and that's why the investigation. Because if someone left him tied for a long period, then, yes, that is unacceptable.

Cops have no need for horses, they're just a showy toy for the department. Hopefully they'll get their horse privileges taken away.

DENVER -- The death of a police horse earned one Denver Police Department Mounted Unit officer one docked day of vacation.

That's the punishment handed down in a departmental order of disciplinary action to Officer Joseph Teeter, who had been partnered with police horse MC Hammer before the horse had to be put down.

In the letter, police say Teeter finished an assignment with MC Hammer, then put the horse back in its stall, leaving to go complete paperwork.

Amid the paperwork, the document said Teeter forgot to check on MC Hammer, forgetting to give him food and water. When officers checked on MC Hammer 16 hours later, they attempted to help the horse with both food and water, but it developed stomach pain.

The officers took MC Hammer to the Littleton Equine Medical Center, which explained the horse developed colic, leading to the horse's eventual euthanasia.

Police said Teeter expressed genuine remorse for injuring his partner. Coupled with that, and the fact that Teeter hadn't had any other departmental violations, Teeter's only punishment is a docked vacation day.

Part of Teeter's punishment was not being reassigned to a different unit. It's not yet known if he's been partnered with a new horse.

Ummmmmm I'm just saying...
if I forgot my to feed or water my partner/ horse/ dog/ cat/ kid it would result in criminal charges.. how is this not criminal?

This is a duplicate.

And just as sickening as the first time I read it. Actually, more so because 1 docked day of vacation is nothing. So what that he showed remorse. A little late don't ya think.

All I can say is: MC Hammer wouldn't have forgot about his human.

Sickening.

No wonder I remember it.
I wrote it up.

Omg. My bad.
So I reported it. I swear I searched- But I searched Joseph Teeter. Not MC Hammer. :oops::sorry:

It's okay.

I think the original didn't say the officers name.
[doublepost=1484017201,1484017106][/doublepost]My bad for not following up.

Honestly, I don't even know how to find my own threads. There must be a link but he'll if I know where it is.

not to mention added nutrients in tabs and checked for any issues. A horse doesn't end up like this overnight it take time

Dry Hay and no water can plug a horse up solid in hours.
yeah, the same with no exercise. I can remember after I was in a horrible car wreck and barely able to move I would hobble out to the barn where I was boarding horses to an irresponsible owner who never came by except maybe once a month not just to feed them and make sure the water trough was filled but the water was clean etc and so on and they were able to move around and were warm enough. I had it set up where they could come in go out get to everything and then huddle more to get warm if needed

@PsychoKitty

I lost my bestest friend in my life because a tooth went bad and he stopped drinking water..
:arghh::arghh::arghh:
I didn't know. I was in the hospital recovering from a heart attack.
:arghh:
The day I got home
:arghh::arghh::arghh:
I found him sick
:arghh::arghh::arghh:
I drove him 200 miles to a specialist and they worked on him for 5 days.
:arghh::arghh::arghh:
On the morning of the 6th day, the vet called me to come in because he wasn't doing well and I needed to come in and say good bye.
:arghh::arghh::arghh::arghh::arghh:
Because I was 4 hours away and I didn't want him to suffer, I told the vet to walk him out to my trailer and put him in and put him down..
:arghh::arghh::arghh::arghh::arghh:
I never got to say good bye.
The vet called me right back and said he passed on his own.
:arghh::arghh::arghh::arghh:
He was so good with tiny kids on him, I like to think he's giving rides to all the littles in these stories.

I would have given you a heart as thanks wasn't good but I don't have any:( Losing a beloved pet is always heartbreaking and more so when you see the way other people treat like animals. I am sick of these morons leaving service animals in the car and killing them and there has been an epidemic. They are ass defenseless or more so than small children [woman in Ukraine that went partying and left infant and toddle alone and they died of starvation and freezing] people like that just deserve to be put down not allowed excuses

A Denver Police Department mounted patrol officer has been docked one vacation day after he left his horse tied in a stall for 16 hours without food or water. The horse developed colic and was euthanized.

Denver police internal investigators did not believe Officer Joseph Teeter intentionally ignored his horse, MC Hammer, after a day of patrolling downtown, and veterinarians could not conclude that the illness was a result of being tied for so long, according to a disciplinary letter issued to the officer.

Teeter, who has been with Denver police since 2006, violated a department rule for carelessly leaving MC Hammer tied, said the Dec. 20 disciplinary letter obtained by The Denver Post.

Teeter remains a member of the department’s mounted patrol, said Christine Downs, a Denver police spokeswoman.
[....]
Teeter and MC Hammer patrolled downtown Denver on Sept. 26, when temperatures were in the upper 70s. Upon returning to the mounted patrol barn, Teeter unloaded the horse and tied him to an eyebolt in the stall and removed his saddle, the letter said.

Teeter took the saddle to the tack room, but he became distracted with paperwork and forgot about his horse. Someone else discovered MC Hammer tied in the stall at 6:15 a.m. the next day, the letter said.

The horse was given food and water and first appeared to be “bright, alert and responsive” for several hours. However, the horse began showing signs of pain around noon and he was taken to the Littleton Equine Medical Center.
[....]
The next morning, the horse was diagnosed with colic and veterinarians determined he would not recover.

“The medical experts who evaluated the horse were unable to conclude that the horse’s condition was caused by being left tied in the stall without food or water for sixteen hours,” the letter said.
