Copenhagen's popular Little Mermaid statue has been defaced with graffiti that reads "RACIST FISH."

On Friday, local police confirmed that the iconic monument — established in honor of the 1800s fairy tale's Danish author Hans Christian Andersen — was the target of a spray painter.
"We can confirm that The Little Mermaid has been vandalized some time before 9:00 a.m. this morning," Copenhagen police said in a statement to Agence France-Press (AFP). "An unknown person has written the words 'Racist Fish' on it. We are investigating the case."

The outlet reported that the same statue has been damaged several times before, including in 1964 and 1998 when the central mermaid character's head was stolen, and also when one of her arms was severed in 1984. Earlier this year, someone tagged the statue with the message "Free Hong Kong."

According to the Associated Press, no one has yet claimed credit for the vandalism of the more than 5-foot-high bronze sculpture located at the Copenhagen harbor, a major tourist attraction.

The statue was completed in August 1913 by sculptor Edvard Eriksen, and was commissioned by Danish brewer Carl Jacobsen as a gift to the City of Copenhagen, according to tourism site Visit Copenhagen. Ane Grum-Schwensen, a scholar at the Hans Christian Andersen Center at the University of Southern Denmark, said she's unsure why The Little Mermaid would be labeled racist.

"Of course, in general with literary works, you can read them with various glasses," Grum-Schwensen said, per AFP. "However, I do find it a little difficult to see, what would be especially racist in the adventure The Little Mermaid."

Just a note to indicate that I included a photo of the Little Mermaid in her original beauty, at the bottom of the article and link - as she deserves to be seen properly and remembered in her natural state.
I was blessed to have a layover in Copenhagen when returning to the US from Munich, and aside from walking some very old streets, as I did in Germany and Austria, she was the only landmark and "tourist attraction" that I wanted to see and visited with the time that I had.

Another case of finding what you are looking for. Most of us start with a mirror.

Work your way through the skin. Through the muscle tissue and down to your essence. What the fuck are you? Really......

The human portion of the sculpture appears to have european facial features.

Was someone sending the message that european-descended people are all racists? Or that any depiction of european-descended people is inherently racist?

Or maybe the vandal was just a retard.

I all that I know for a fact, is that I am less than $20.00 USD of various chemical constructs in financial value: including carbon, calcium, a multitude of various other chemicals that combined, and while living constitute what is currently considered a "sentient person".
Otherwise known as simply: stardust.
While physics tells us no information is ever lost, do we truly grasp the meaning of "our essence"?
Will we have to die to find out if we're part of a universal consciousness, or are/were we either understanding the truthfulness in ourselves and lives, or are we complete deniers of this collective consciousness in our physical lives that possibly continues on past death, that we only know the truth of after our physical remains have ceased to show life, and are going through the natural process of decomposition and returning to the basic elements we're made of?
What I do know of my "essence", is that I am to give love, give love, get along, get along, with love to all that I meet in life, regardless of their own feelings or oppositions to myself and what my soul has experienced, seen and possibly remembers, regardless of "this time" or previous/future experiences my soul may have left or remembered to or of experience(s) not yet had by my consciousness at this "time" phase of my own realizations.

Plato said it best in his "Soliloquy", describing the concept of "soulmates"...
How we all were once attached as 2 beings, with one giant head, two faces, 4 arms, 4 legs, until we angered the Gods with out pride and our strength and defiance, and they split us all into two separate beings, always in search of the other half we'd lost....
Here's a musical variation of it that I know some history teachers use to reach their middle to high school students with, as it's from a popular musical, "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" that many of them have already heard and enjoyed.
John Cameron Mitchell along with Stephen Trask just nailed it, as to the historical aspects of Plato's Soliloquy IMO, and might I add to a concept that we all have soulmates, interwoven throughout possibly lifetimes or time frames (NB: Time is not linear as we perceive it, but curved, and is the known 4th dimension in our current understanding of the universe).:

Split-Aparts!!

"Fold along dotted line, then cut carefully. Remember to have your parents help you if you're still a demigod!"

"And some Indian god
Sewed the wound up into a hole,
Pulled it round to our belly
To remind us of the price we pay.
And Osiris and the gods of the Nile
Gathered up a big storm
To blow a hurricane,
To scatter us away,
In a flood of wind and rain,
And a sea of tidal waves,
To wash us all away,
And if we don't behave
They'll cut us down again
And we'll be hopping round on one foot
And looking through one eye.

Last time I saw you
We had just split in two.
You were looking at me.
I was looking at you.
You had a way so familiar,
But I could not recognize,
Cause you had blood on your face;
I had blood in my eyes.
But I could swear by your expression
That the pain down in your soul
Was the same as the one down in mine.
That's the pain,
Cuts a straight line
Down through the heart;
We called it love.
So we wrapped our arms around each other,
Trying to shove ourselves back together.
We were making love,
Making love.
It was a cold dark evening,
Such a long time ago,
When by the mighty hand of Jove,
It was the sad story
How we became
Lonely two-legged creatures,
It's the story of
The origin of love.
That's the origin of love."

Protesters, rioters , vandals, and pillagers) are down to ruining nice things just because they are well loved.
Example: The popular elk statue in Portland, Oregon
The elk statue was donated to Portland by former mayor David P. Thompson in 1900 to honor the wildlife that once roamed the valley, The Oregonian reported.

The elk has been vandalized many times. It was vandalized during the Occupy Portland protest (2011), and had its antlers repaired in early 2012.[8] The statue was tagged with anti-Trump messages in 2016. In 2020, during the George Floyd protests, people protesting police violence built a bonfire around the statue. The sculpture was subsequently removed to avoid toppling and for cleaning.
