An unidentified deceased newborn was found by maintenance workers in a garbage bag on the side of an intersection on September 27, 1993, according to local outlet Newsday.

Her identity remained unknown for decades until authorities connected the child to 55-year-old Denise Reischman Merker in 2025, the outlet reported.

Authorities did not specify how they linked Merker to the victim, but told Newsday that a "significant factor" was genetic genealogy.

Upon questioning Merker, she allegedly confessed to the murder, saying, "I did it, I did everything."
"I put the paper towel in the baby's mouth because she was crying," Merker said. The woman was 22 years old at the time of the murder, Law&Crime reported.

Why is her age of 22 important, she was not a child, she could have done a whole of things that didn't involve shoving a paper towel down a newborn's throat and throwing her away. Her age had nothing to do with it. I hope she goes away forever.

well to me at least saying her age when she gave birth to that little one as 22 only means that she wasn't a young teen, afraid to tell their parents, etc but a full grown woman that new better... maybe back in 93 young teens weren't as aware of places that they could leave a new born safely at and no questions asked but for sure older teens and adults new of those place ...
