Logan W. Laughinghouse, 28, and Autumn Sproule, 27, both residents of Newport, are accused of causing significant harm to the child. Warrants indicate that the incident took place on August 3, 2025, and allege that the defendants intentionally inflicted physical injury, brain atrophy, metabolic instability, and a severe medical state secondary to malnutrition on the infant.

According to deputies, the investigation started August 3 after the pair’s 11-month-old daughter was taken to Carteret Health Care with some major medical concerns.

The infant was airlifted to ECU Health Medical Center due to the severity of her issues, according to deputies. Warrants say the couple “…did intentionally inflict serious physical injury, brain atrophy, metabolic instability, severe medical state secondary to malnutrition" to the child.
Deputies says medical professionals filed a report with Carteret County Child Protective Services, prompting a joint investigation with the sheriff’s office.

Deputies say the two were taken into custody on Sunday, Laughinghouse at his Newport home and Sproule at ECU Health Medical Center.

Laughinghouse and Sproule are being held in the Carteret County Detention Center with each under a $75,000.00 secured bond.
