I don't think he can claim insanity. I don't know what happened to set him off. He is the only one that knows and I guess he won't say. I wish he had successfully committed suicide before killing the boy.

Wow. Can't believe I missed this one. Something was going on about the father , or the mom wouldn't have called the police so soon. How heart wrenching for her!

David Janzow found not guilty of murdering his son Luca; mother vows to raise awareness about mental illness after tragedy
A man stabbed his four-year-old son to death in the belief the boy was developing the same mental problems as him, court documents reveal.

David Janzow killed his son Luca in Adelaide in July last year, with a court now finding him not guilty of murder by reason of mental incompetence.

Documents tendered to the court said Janzow was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and had a long history of depression.

[In] a victim impact statement from the boy's mother, Julia Trinne
...
"[He was] A beautiful-natured, kind, gentle, caring, happy, shy, tall, clever, cheeky, creative boy with the most incredible blue eyes, infectious smile and laugh.
....
"Loving Dave was easy, that is not to say that life was easy because it certainly had its challenges."

She said there were challenges with her husband's mental health over the years including depression, but the escalation in his mental illness came suddenly and without warning.

"Dave became acutely unwell in a short period of time with absolutely tragic consequences," she said.

"There was no warning. There was no suggestion any of us were in danger.
...
"Greater awareness and understanding of what professionals, families, friends and the community can do to make a positive difference to people with mental illness.

"There will be positive things to come out of this tragedy and I will make sure this happens."

So he stabbed the boy? If he really believed he was lovingly saving his son from the agony of mental illness, why not kill him in a gentler way? IDK, seems so full of rage. I'm trying not to think or feel about this baby's final moments.

A father who fatally stabbed his four-year-old son because he believed the boy would become a psychopath like him has been granted supervised release from a secure mental health facility.

David Janzow used a hunting knife to stab his son Luca, who later died in hospital, in his ute in July 2014 and then drove to Athelstone in Adelaide's north-eastern suburbs where he alerted a police patrol.

He was charged with murder but was found not guilty by reason of mental incompetence in December 2015.

Documents tendered to the court during Janzow's trial stated he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and had a long history of depression.

After stabbing his son, he told emergency service workers and psychiatrists that no-one deserved him and he was a psychopath.
