Rajon Grant, 43, was arrested and charged with criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child. The father was taken to the 52nd Precinct.
The unlicensed gun, which appears to be a .9mm., was stored in a safe in the closet, but it is unclear if the closet or safe was unlocked.
The boy shot himself in the head inside an apartment at 5 Fordham Hill Oval, in the Fordham Manor section of the Bronx, around 12:30 p.m. on Monday, according to police and Bronx Councilman Fernando Cabrera.
He was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, the NYPD said. He remains in critical but stable condition.
A neighbor told 1010 WINS the boy’s younger siblings ran to his apartment and told him the boy had been shot. When the neighbor went to the boy’s apartment, he found him lying on the floor unresponsive, he said."
