A Denton County man was charged with capital murder Thursday after the death of a 3-year-old boy he was baby-sitting while the child's mother gave birth.

Curtis Leon Copeland, 26, remains jailed in lieu of $500,000 bail, charged with the murder of Jesse Fleming Fisher Jr. in his home north of Krum.
[...]

Court documents show that Sharon Nicole Worthy, 20, brought Jesse and his 1-year-old brother to Copeland's home March 25 and left them Tuesday to deliver her third son.

Copeland, who had told sheriff's investigators and a Texas Ranger that he saw bruises on Jesse when he arrived, said he took the children to a neighbor to ask for help Tuesday after he found Jesse on the floor unconscious, documents say.

Doctors told investigators that Jesse had a broken pelvis, severe head trauma and broken thoracic vertebrae.

He also had been sexually assaulted, the doctors determined.

Documents say investigators obtained a search warrant for Copeland's home after he didn't show up for a polygraph test and found handwritten notes to Worthy and his father, saying he had done "something bad" and was sick.

Sheriff's Sgt. Roger Griggs said Child Protective Services investigators took the 1-year-old and the newborn boy while the investigation continues into whether Worthy had any involvement in the boy's death.

Curtis Leon Copeland, with whom the mother and two children had lived for several days, was arrested Wednesday at a Denton hospital while he was visiting a relative, said Tom Reedy, a spokesman for the Denton County Sheriff's Department.
[...]

The 19-year-old mother, who gave birth Tuesday, had not been charged, but the investigation was continuing, Reedy said. Child Protective Services had already been investigating a report that the 3-year-old had been abused in early March, a spokeswoman said.
[...]

CPS has four reports on file regarding the mother, spokeswoman Marleigh Meisner said. In March 2007, a report of neglectful supervision and physical neglect was filed involving the one child she had then. Investigators reported finding no neglect.

In July 2009, she was reported for medical and physical neglect and neglectful supervision. This time, investigators found "reason to believe" the report. She then had two children, records show.

"They were offered family services," Meisner said.

In December, CPS received another report of neglectful supervision. That report was recorded as "unable to determine."

On March 9, CPS received a report of physical abuse of the 3-year-old. That report was being investigated when the child died, Meisner said.

Jesse Fleming Fisher Jr. died at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. He had suffered severe head trauma, a broken pelvis, a broken neck, black eyes and bruises all over his body. He also had been sexually assaulted, Denton County Sherriff's Sgt. Roger Griggs said.
[...]

Copeland was not the father of any of the children, Griggs said.
[...]

According to court records, Copeland told sheriff’s investigators and a Texas Ranger that Worthy called on the afternoon of March 25 to tell him she was on her way. She called a few minutes later, he said, to report that Jesse had fallen down some stairs but was up and walking around. He said he saw a bruise on the boy’s right eye when they arrived and other small bruises on his body.

He said the child was ill on Saturday and his eating habits were altered throughout the weekend. On Tuesday, he said, the boy told him after lunch that he was tired, so he told him to take a nap. He said he heard a thud and found the boy unconscious on the bedroom floor. At that time, he said, he went to the neighbor to ask for help.

19 yr old with 3 kids...a history with cps and cps failed yet again...then the final epic fail, trusting a guy to take care of toddlers and one gets beat to death...i cant even comprehend this :argh:

My heart hurts thinking of all the abuse that little one probably faced in his short life. How many people failed that little boy? CPS, the mother, the unknown father, the person who contributed to his death...The mother, in my opinion, didn't give a shit about her child and the end result is his death. He falls down the stairs and she just continues on her way as if nothing happened, leaving him with a virtual stranger so she can pop out another paycheck! :banghead:

How much 'evidence' do cps require before they actually step in and do something? Because it seems to me that only the death of a child actually gets them off their lazy asses, and prompts them to remove the other kids in the family and investigate.

Do they wait until there is one less mouth to feed, one less child to re-home?

This poor childs life was absolute hell, and nobody did a fucking thing to help him. And now it's too damn late.

RIP Jesse Fleming Fisher Jr.

Rot from the toes up Curtis Leon Copeland and Sharon Nicole Worthy.

The only thing that abusive incubator is worthy of is a beating. To death.

The mother of a 3-year-old who was beaten to death last week was arrested Friday night on charges that she failed to call authorities or seek medical help for her toddler after she said she saw her boyfriend abuse the boy, Denton County authorities said Sunday.

Sharon N. Worthy, 19, of Bowie was arrested on a charge of recklessly causing injury to a child resulting in serious bodily injury.
[...]

The beating happened while the mother and her two children were staying with her boyfriend, who has been arrested on a charge of capital murder, authorities said.
[...]

Under questioning by a Texas Ranger and investigators with the Denton County Sheriff's Department, Worthy said she saw Curtis Leon Copeland, 26, abuse Jesse on March 29, but she never called authorities, according to the affidavit.

Worthy left Jesse and another 1-year-old child with Copeland on Tuesday while she went to Bridgeport to have a baby, authorities said. The 1-year-old and the newborn were in foster care Sunday, CPS officials have said.

Court documents state that Worthy was not charged with murder because she was not present at the time of the fatal attack.

But she was present, according to the arrest affidavit, on Monday when Copeland allegedly pushed the 3-year-old violently in the back, causing him to land on the floor face first. Worthy neither reported that to police nor sought medical attention for him.

A Child Protective Services investigator assigned to the case told sheriff’s investigators that Worthy visited her son in the intensive care unit of a Fort Worth Children’s hospital with the CPS worker in the room. The CPS worker said Worthy neither cried nor seemed concerned about her young son, who was hooked up to machines that kept him breathing.

Court records show that CPS has investigated Worthy on other charges of child abuse.

Her sons all have different fathers, and Jesse’s father is in prison, according to a court document. Copeland is not the father of any of Worthy’s children.

Worthy and her children were not to have any contact with Copeland because he is a convicted felon, but her neighbors saw Copeland at her Bowie apartment several times, the affidavit says.

Such a tragedy. I realize that there are people who have had multiple kids at a very young age, some who post here, and who are wonderful parents. But this whole story makes me sick--obviously this girl is low in intelligence and resources, and at some point someone should have stepped in. Or rather, stepped in and made a difference in the lives of the children before one lost his. CPS apparently did a lot of stepping in and right back out. It's a sad and telling story when you read about the history of investigations, and the fact that this little guy was finally tortured to death while she was having another baby.

I hope that the other children will never have to deal with this "mother" and her bad choices anymore.

Goes to show you that you may have ovaries, and a working cervix, but that alone does not make you a mother. The ability to nurture, love and most importantly protect, makes you a mother. Not being able to conceive and push a baby out of your body.

She should be charged with his murder too. Had she lived up to her duties of motherhood, she would have sought out help for her babies, and little Jesse would still be alive.

First off, child protection agencies save tens if not hundreds of thousands of children from abusive homes every year. We don't hear about those, though, because there's nothing noteworthy about an agency doing what it was designed to do.

What makes it difficult is that you can just go around yanking kids from their parents willy-nilly. There has to be pretty solid evidence. CPS workers only see snapshots of a child's life. They have to base their reports on whether or not the child is okay they day they visit. Whether or not they have definitive enough evidence to pull a kid depends on just a handful of days.

This doesn't mean the CPS doesn't screw up, sometimes badly. But, sometimes, abuse isn't obvious enough until it's too late.

These two deserve the death penalty and a swift execution. No need to waste taxpayer money on these two. Jessie Jr's injuries were so severe that he was almost unrecognizable. This whole mess is a tragedy on so very many levels. Both participants are drug users, Sharon never shed a tear when Jessie Jr was in the hospital dieing. In fact, she was already making excuses for her "penis". I know the half sister of Jessie Jr. She is 7 yrs old and in my house on a daily basis. Her mother is a very good friend of mine and we babysit for her while she works. My friend was present at the hospital when Jessie JR died and saw first hand how Sharon acted. My friend also took it upon herself to take up donations and take out a loan to bury Jessie since his piece of shit mother would do nothing to help, not even make arrangements. She had all donations sent directly to White Family Funeral Home in Bowie, TX with the stipulation that any excess be donated to the local domestic violence program. I hope these two rot in hell for what they have done to this little boy and what remains of his siblings and family. :banghead:

A state judge ordered two young sons of a Bowie woman to remain in foster care Monday while she sits in the Denton County Jail awaiting trial in the death of a third son last month.

Judge Alyce Bondurant of the Region 8 Child Protection Court noted that Child Protective Services is seeking to terminate the parental rights of Sharon Worthy, 19, and the rights of the fathers of her sons.

CPS staffers will provide services to Worthy and the father of the newborn in the next few months, Meisner said. But, she said, "I doubt she will get any visitation rights at this time because she's in jail."

looking at the 2 photo's of the mother they are very different. She looked well kept in the photo with her son and looks like crap in the later photo.

I'd be interested to know the condition of the newborn baby... if drugs were present when the baby was born??

Poor little Jesse Jn... may you rest in peace sweet angel.

That really pisses me off. My son had to have a tooth pulled and he was so upset and crying that it made e cry. When my children are in pain, I feel like I am in pain right along with them. As a matter of fact the tooth pulling incident was so traumatic for both him and I that the next time they found out he needed a tooth pulled I drove 2 hrs away so he could be sedated. What makes sperm and egg donors (cannot bring myself to call them parents) like these people tick? Do they get off on causing pain, just don't care either way?I will never understand.

I am one of those people who had children at a very young age, 2 by the time I was 18, my children were/are never abused so age of the parent is no excuse. While I will agree that some parents at ANY age are just too immature to have any children, there has no be some reason why they just snap like they do. Could it really be that they just pop kids out for gov't hand outs? Even at 15 when I had my daughter, I never received any handouts, I know they are there for people who need them, as they should be but I had a very supportive family and I guess I just never needed it. My main question is what makes these people tick? I wish we could study them to find out why they do what they do.

Before we have them drawn and quartered that is...

A Denton County grand jury has indicted a Sanger man on a capital murder charge in the beating death of a 3-year-old Bowie boy who he was babysitting for his girlfriend while she went to a hospital to have a baby.

Grand jurors returned the indictment against Curtis Leon Copeland, 26, on June 17 in Denton in the death of Jesse Fisher.

Copeland is charged with capital murder of a person under 6 years of age. He was in the Denton County Jail on Monday in lieu of $500,000.

The Denton County district attorney’s office has not decided on whether to seek the death penalty, said Denton Assistant District Attorney Jamie Beck on Monday.

. . .

The grand jury also indicted Copeland’s girlfriend and Fisher’s mother, Sharon Worthy, 20, of Bridgeport, on a charge of injury to a child/recklessness.

The young mother also was in the Denton County Jail with bail set at $250,000 on Monday.

At about 6:30 a.m. on March 30, Worthy left her sons, Jesse and Malachi Yeley, 1, alone with Copeland . . . while she went to a Bridgeport hospital for scheduled induced labor to have her third child . . .

The baby, named Arian Lee Worthy, was born about 5 p.m.

. . .

On March 31, Jesse died at Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth. Medical personnel alerted authorities that the child had numerous injuries and had been sexually assaulted, authorities have reported. Worthy and Copeland were the only people who had cared for Jesse alone recently, and their accounts of his injuries differed, authorities said.

The boy suffered a head injury, a broken vertebra, a broken hip and bruises all over his body, in addition to having been sexually assaulted, officials have reported. When authorities checked on Malachi, he had a “busted lip and a bruise on his bottom,” according to a CPS petition. Worthy could not tell CPS officials how he had gotten them, the report states.

The newborn and Malachi are in foster care, according to CPS officials. The state agency is seeking to terminate Worthy’s parental rights and terminate the rights of their fathers.

This indeed is a tragic event.

I grew up with Curtis Copeland.

Let me point that CPS was reported but they were still "investigating" child abuse 3 months later when Jessie Fisher passed. CPS had not made one visit based on that latest child abuse allegation. Agency neglect maybe??

I believe there are a lot of people to blame. All evidence has not been released. I am not trying to remove or place blame on anyone.

Curtis Copeland (like many other citizens) was raised in a "rough tough" environment. I remember his fathers 'firm hand' and Curtis' frequent broken arms.

I have not seen Curtis in several years, indeed he is capable of pushing a child to the ground. In my mind I just cannot fathom that he would commit sexual assault to someone, definitely not a child. If he is charged with these sexual assault charges I hope that they have good forensic evidence to tie him to such thing.

This mother bounced around all over the place, she's not intelligent, dependable, or responsible. Many different people watched over her children so I hope the sexual abuse evidence is forensic evidence.

I pray that the family can heal from this tragedy. I pray that the other two children can be placed in a loving, supporting and nurturing home.

My quote: "Stop breeding if you can't feed them." "There are other options, ie: Adoption."

Thanks for your post, outspokendenton.

To look at the evidence we do have, it appears that Jessie Jr. was beaten and sexually assaulted in the same incident. A simple medical exam is perfectly capable of dating an injury, particularly that kind of injury. The medical reports will have detailed the abuse evidence by law, up to and including "age" of injuries. Keep in mind that rape is not always a sexual crime - when it occurs in the context of a beating, it's usually about power and dominance and not about sex. Unfortunately, sexual assault is something that happens more often when a child is having trouble with toilet training, which may well have been the instigating factor in Jessie's final assault.

The mother here is totally negligent and a complete waste of skin and ovaries. Three babydaddies and another live in by the time she's 20? That's pretty prodigious whoring around, frankly, and obviously she had issues with common sense and relationships herself. Clearly there were drug issues, and druggies hang with druggies. Meth causes significant brain changes which destroy the ability to bond with a child. Meth also can cause irrational, intense rage that can express itself via sexual violence.

And if Curtis is capable of pushing a toddler onto his face, he is certainly capable of killing - it's only a few more hits, right? Whether CPS dropped the ball or not, the responsibility for Jessie's death lies with the person who made him dead, and with his mother, who clearly didn't give a shit what happened to him. Curtis himself said he was "sick" and had "done something bad". Sounds like Curtis knows exactly what he did, even if he doesn't know why. And he should never be let out of prison again.

Sanger man accused of beating girlfriend's toddler to death while she gave birth
Our colleagues at the Denton Record-Chronicle are following the capital murder trial of a Sanger man accused of beating and sexually assaulting his girlfriend's 3-year-old son.

Curtis Copeland, 28, was caring for the boy and his 1-year-old brother while his girlfriend gave birth in a Decatur hospital on March 30, 2010.

That afternoon, Copeland took little Jesse Fleming Fisher Jr. to a neighbor's house and asked someone to call 911. The boy was bleeding from the nose and ears when paramedics arrived.

Copeland told police that Jesse had been sick and suffered a seizure after falling down a flight of stairs a few days earlier. The boy's injuries included severe head trauma, a broken pelvis and vertebra and numerous bruises.

If convicted, Copeland faces an automatic life sentence. Prosecutors are not seeking the death penalty. His trial began Monday with jury selection.

The boy's mother, Sharon Worthy, also faces a charge of injury to a child in the case. Her other two children have been taken into state custody.

I had two kids by the time I was 19 and if my children's father put a hand to any of my kids he would have drawn back a nub. She looks like a meth head. Not many woman can say that they gave birth to a child and a day later their eldest lay dead after being beaten and raped. It's just another awful story with an innocent paying the price for the life style choices of their shit for brains parent.

A jury found Curtis Leon Copeland, 28, guilty of capital murder Thursday in the 2010 death of 3-year-old Jesse Fleming Fisher Jr. The verdict brings with it a mandatory life sentence with no possibility of parole.

Copeland was minding Jesse and his 1-year-old brother on March 30, 2010, while Sharon Worthy, the children’s mother and Copeland’s girlfriend, was at a hospital giving birth. During three days of testimony this week, the jury heard a taped interview that two Texas Rangers conducted with Copeland on April 5, 2010. During that interview, Copeland said he became angry with Jesse that morning after he soiled himself and the area around him.

The fatal injury came when Copeland grabbed the toddler and threw him to the floor with great force, according to medical testimony.

Copeland told the Rangers that it was about 10 a.m. when he threw Jesse to the floor. But he did not call 911 until about 4 p.m., after Jesse began having trouble breathing.

The jury, composed of nine men and three women, was read a long charge that gave them the option of lesser findings, including murder and injury to a child. Jurors deliberated for more than two and a half hours Thursday afternoon. . . .

Investigators testified that they went back into the home after the April 5 interview to retrieve the paddle that Copeland told investigators he had used to hit Jesse and the boots that Copeland said he was wearing when he kicked Jesse.

Prosecutor Tony Paul told the jury that Copeland’s description of the events — in which he admitted that he didn’t know why he “gets so angry sometimes” — offered only a glimpse into what really happened to Jesse that morning. . . .

Jesse had many bruises on both the front and back of his head, and while his skull was not fractured, his pelvis and sacrum were, doctors said. In addition, he had bruising all over his body, including his chest, back and bottom, arms and legs, feet and ears.

The medical examiner detailed for the jury how Jesse’s brain, swollen and bleeding, had been pushed to one side from the throw. . . .

Prosecutors brought Jesse Fisher Sr. to the stand late Wednesday to introduce one of only two photos the jury saw of Jesse as a happy, rambunctious child. . . .

Defense attorney Bruce Isaacks told the jury that Jesse’s mother and the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services shared the blame in Jesse’s death, and that he did not believe Copeland intended to kill Jesse, nor did he know that the beating would lead to Jesse’s death.

It was only when Jesse’s breathing became labored that Copeland realized Jesse was in trouble, Isaacks said. . . .

During the trial, Isaacks consistently objected to all evidence introduced in relation to an injury Jesse suffered in and around his rectum. Copeland admitted in the April 5 interview to sticking his finger in Jesse’s rectum. The state, however, did not allege sexual assault. . . .
http://www.dreamindemon.com/forums/...ad&p=581774&highlight=jesse+fisher#post581774

Hurray for the verdict and the mandatory sentence.

I plainly don't understand how an adult can not understand that repeated kicking with steel toed boots, hitting so hard with a paddle that the pelvis and sacrum are broken, bruiting and beating can lead to death and certainly to severe, life long damage. That's beyond stupid and a lousy defense. The kid is a tiny 3 year old and in no way able to stand up to the damage an adult can dish out when using all his strength.

And what the hell reason did he have for "sticking his finger in Jesse's rectum"?!! Really?!! They're going to let that pass?

Yeah, sexually assaulting a screaming, crying youngster always calms them right the hell down!

I will never understand the logic/anger that must be behind an act like that. Like beating them isn't severe enough.

A Sanger man convicted of beating his girlfriend’s 3-year-old son to death has been sentenced to life in prison without parole. . . .

He was baby-sitting for his girlfriend, Sharon Worthy, 22, of Bridgeport.

Worthy is awaiting trial on a charge of injury to a child/recklessness. Police said she failed to call authorities or to get medical help for her child.

Authorities have said that Worthy left Jesse and her 1-year-old son, Malachi Yeley, alone with Copeland on March 30, 2010, while she went to a Bridgeport hospital to give birth. . . .

Malachi and the third child are in foster care, officials said.

I'll hang on to see what her verdict will be. I hope they get to her soon, now Copeland is convicted.
