Mata Hari

Dirty Gutter Bitch
Gotta give it to Tamisha here, she was not fucking around. Unlike so many others who somehow fail at their suicide, she made sure that wasn't the case here.

GARFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. — The mother was the last person alive in a northern Michigan house where a couple and their two young children were found dead in an apparent "homicide-suicide," according to authorities.

Tamisha Mendenhall, 34, suffered a self-inflicted, fatal stab wound in the groin that pierced her femoral artery, Michigan State Police said in a news release Monday.

The exact cause of death is pending for her husband, Jeffrey Allan Mendenhall, 54; 6-year-old Thomas and 3-year-old Olivia, said Sgt. Scott Bates.

Troopers found their bodies Thursday in their Garfield Township home. They likely died two days earlier.

It's not clear if Tamisha Mendenhall acted alone in the deaths, state police Lt. Kip Belcher told The Grand Rapids Press Monday.

Belcher said a note was found that "mentioned the children were innocent." The note was believed to have been written by Jeffrey Mendenhall.

"There's absolutely no conclusion at this point that the mother was the sole responsible individual for committing the homicides of the two young children," Belcher told the newspaper. "We certainly cannot eliminate Jeff as being a participant."

He told the Traverse City Record-Eagle: "What we do not know is whether Jeffrey Mendenhall or the two young children expired first. We do not know in what order that took place. Neither do we know at this point in time which parent, or whether both parents were responsible for the death of the children."

Preliminary autopsy results showed no signs of physical injury to the father and children. Empty prescription medication bottles were found in the house and a helium tank in the children's room, police said in a release.

Medications listed on the bottles contained Benzodiazepine, which police said generally is prescribed to treat anxiety and induce sleep.

"Some of the prescription medication capsules had been opened," police said. "White residue was discovered on a couple small medical cups."

Officers also found empty trash bags, vinyl tubing and the helium tank's valve in a kitchen trash container. The valve had been modified with tape to attach it to the vinyl tubing.

Jeffrey Mendenhall's body was on a hallway floor. His head was on a pillow in the doorway where the bodies of their children were found. He also was holding flowers.

Tamisha Mendenhall's body was found a few feet away.

Interesting that after three "soft" deaths, she chose to cut her femoral artery. I'll be interested to learn more about the details in this case.

I don't even know what the helium was for?
I always thought it was for balloons and talking funny.

It's a popular choice for suicides. They put a bag or mask over their heads, breathe the gas, don't get any oxygen, and quickly die. Because they never stop breathing, it isn't as traumatic as being manually smothered or strangled. It's called "inert gas asphyxia." (Lots on the web about it.) Reputed to be quick and painless, unlike stabbing your groin to cut the femoral artery. :wtf: Though I guess if you know where the artery is located and have a sharp blade, it could be a pretty quick death (1-1/2 to 2 minutes). The femoral is a major artery, cutting it creates a major gusher.

Police release gruesome details after Traverse City murder-suicide
GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich. — Michigan State Police on Monday released disturbing new information in the deaths of a Garfield Township family of four.

A woman, a man, and their two young children were found dead in the Traverse City area home Thursday night in an apparent murder-suicide. According to a release, Tamisha Marie Mendenhall, 34, was found dead in the home after apparently stabbing herself in the groin and piercing her femoral artery.

Jeffrey Allan Mendenhall, 54, and the couple’s children, 3-year-old Olivia and 6-year-old Thomas, were also found dead inside the home. Police said in a release that the three bodies were posed, and the children were holding stuffed animals and flowers.

Jeffrey Mendenhall and the children showed no signs of physical injury, according to a release.

State police said they discovered multiple empty bottles of the prescription benzodiazepine, a class of drug used to treat anxiety and induce sleep. White residue was found on a couple of medical cups, officials said. However, toxicology results for the victims have not yet been released.

A helium tank was found in the bedroom where the children’s bodies were, according to a release. Vinyl tubing was attached to the tank with tape.

Police believe the family died Aug. 11, the same day that the prescriptions, helium tank, and flowers were obtained. Officials initially went to the home after a coworker of Jeffrey Mendenhall reported that he hadn’t been at work for several days, according to 9&10 News.

Tamisha Mendenhall was the last person alive in the home, according to a release.

The investigation is ongoing.

Victims of murder/suicide found posed with flowers
The investigation has revealed that the helium tank was rented, flowers were purchased and prescription medications were picked up earlier on the day of August 11.

"It appears evident to me that there was some thought, predisposition, premeditation if you will," said Lt. Belcher.

MSP say they also found a short note in the home that they believe was written by Jeffrey.

"It was a brief, a very brief note and there was a mention of the children's innocence in this circumstance," said Lt. Belcher. "Beyond that I do not have the contents of that note."

The investigation continues and is pending the toxicology results, the complete forensic autopsy reports and an analysis of computer history and cell phones records after being removed from the home.

According to Grand Traverse County Undersheriff Nate Alger, deputies have responded to three suicide calls at the home since 2008.

In June 2008, Alger says that reports show deputies responded to the home for a call of a possible suicidal subject. The subject involved was Jeffrey, according to Alger.

In July 2012, deputies responded to a similair call that also involved Jeffrey. This time deputies petitioned for him to be transported to Munson Medical Center, meaning he was sent there against his will, according to Alger.

In Feb 2013, deputies responded to the home on a call involving a suicide attempt, involving Tamisha. Alger says she was transported to Munson Medical Center after deputies filled out a petition.

So both parents were fuckin nutters.

Was there no other family members who could have taken the kids in? Or were these two shitheads too selfish to place them with reasonable minded human beings?

I agree anyone who would bring kids into this madness has to be selfish but hopefully the one that's responsible for killing the kids is frying in hell

The dad has got to be involved because I can't imagine swallowing enough meds to over dose and not realizing it ..

We read everyday about children having both parents who are abusive to them but this is my first where both parents are suicidal.. My heart goes out to these poor babies..

Benzos are difficult to fatally overdose on by themselves. They differ materially from their predecessors, the barbituates, in that regard.

The first thing that came to mind was that the benzos were for the kids, to send them to sleep so they wouldn't fight the helium.

Why didnt they take the kids on the very first attempt why didnt they place them with someone mentally stable, unless this was before the kids god thats sickening bring the kids down with you just cuz your fkng miserable rot in hell where all the bad mommy and daddies are and may the children go straight to heaven and be happy! If there is such a place all these stories make it super hard to have faith im tryin tho

How unusual that both parents would enter into a suicide murder pact .

Sadly a lot of suicidal people take the lives of their children as they believe no one would love them as they do , or their minds are so far gone into that dark place that they believe the children are better off dead than in this world .

You really can't rationalise or understand that level of thinking and mental Ill health - even if you have been there , as it is complicated and just doesnt make sense. It never can .

It is a crying shame for these beautiful children that the parents were not stable enough to parent/ cope with life and that they were murdered as a result. Too heartbreaking .

Those benzos would've worked quick though so in all the sickening crimes we see on here , at least we can try to take comfort in the fact that those babies probably didn't suffer .

Any chance that the coroner has the time wrong on when Mom and Dad died? Because had he died after her, I'd guess, given the note about the innocence of the kids, that he was pissed at her, hence the need to point out that they were innocent, and that's why she's the one who died so much more violently. Add to that the fact that Dad's been suicidal to the point of police being called twice.

Of course on the other hand, she's the most recent to have a suicide attempt so.

I'm just having trouble wrapping my head around going to all the trouble to make sure everyone in the family dies peacefully and then stabbing yourself in the crotch. I mean... if you ran out of the other supplies why not your wrists?

..I'm starting to think they made a suicide pact to die together .( mom dad). They took the meds and everyone died but her....she came too at some point and realizing she didn't die so that's why she did something as gruesome as stabbing herself.. She was gonna make sure she died this time..

I'm inclined to agree with DamagedGoods on this. The only thing wrong is he was posed with the kids (God rest) though, he could have stabbed her in the crotch and then lay with the kids. Going to keep an eye on this story.

This is local to my area so when I first read about the helium, and all the things found I googled it.
Its called a suicide bag and pro right to die groups even sell kits. The helium takes the panic, so I'm thinking they drugged the kids did the suicide bag to kill them "painlessly".
I totally think dad was in on it. He wrote the short note that was left. Maybe dad went with his sons but he was in on it. Somehow, he was. She then posed them with the flowers that were bought earlier that day.

Stabbed in the groin is the medias way of glaming up their story. It was a single stab Wound to a major artery. She knew what she was doing. I read in one article they both worked at Munson medical. Would explain how she would know the exact place to stab.
Tragic they chose to take their children with them. Tragic there was nobody close enough to them to see their struggle and save those little ones.

Many questions, few answers in Mendenhall case
TRAVERSE CITY — It's been more than a week since state troopers found a Garfield Township family of four dead in an apparent murder-suicide, but officials remain tight-lipped about whether the parents' long history of mental health issues prompted concerns for the family's children before the tragedy.

"Behavioral difficulties" shared by Jeffrey Mendenhall, 54, and Tamisha Mendenhall, 34, are a primary focus of an ongoing state police probe into their deaths and those of their children, Thomas, 6, and Olivia, 3, said Michigan State Police Lt. Kip Belcher.

Community members recalled the Mendenhall family as tight-knit, cheerful and active in Thomas' school. But records show both Jeffrey and Tamisha Mendenhall showed past suicidal behavior and were involuntary hospitalized for treatment.

What's unclear is whether those difficulties led authorities to report concerns about the children's safety inside the 844 Shady Lane mobile home where state troopers on Aug. 13 found the family dead. Belcher said Friday he didn't know if Children's Protective Services ever opened a case involving the Mendenhalls.

"I don't know where my detectives are at with that, and to what extent they'll explore that issue," Belcher said.

CPS officials denied a Freedom of Information Act request for any records involving the Mendenhall family, citing exemptions under Michigan's Child Protection Law. Agency spokeswoman Maura Campbell said state law restricted her from saying whether CPS investigated the family.

"I can't tell you one way or another," she said.

Grand Traverse County Prosecutor Bob Cooney said it would make sense for investigators to look into any contacts the Mendenhalls had with CPS or any other agencies.

"I think we all want to know if there’s more that could have been done somewhere down the line," he said.

State law mandates that individuals employed in a host of professions — ranging from physicians and nurses, to teachers, school counselors and law enforcement — must immediately report suspected child abuse or neglect to CPS, and must follow up the initial report with a written report within 72 hours.

But parental mental health issues alone don't necessarily mean CPS will open an investigation. That's why Grand Traverse County sheriff's deputies didn't contact CPS in three different "suicidal subject" cases dating back to 2008 that involved the Mendenhall parents.

Undersheriff Nate Alger said deputies didn't note any direct danger to the children in any case. He said mental health issues can be distressing for children, but not rise to high standards CPS sets to open an investigation.

"We don't do CPS referrals on every event like that unless there's an immediate and obvious threat to the child's health," he said.

Alger called what happened in the Mendenhall home a "horrible event" that likely will prompt reflection by local officials and service providers on what more could have been done.

"We're certainly going to have a discussion about how did we respond to these cases and did we respond appropriately?" he said.

Belcher said detectives will continue looking at the Mendenhalls' past behavior while they wait for forensic results to return.

"The focus is still continuing to conduct interviews with associates, coworkers, friends, and family," he said.

Family of 4 dead: History of depression, suicidal thoughts for mother and father
Grand Traverse County sheriff's deputies released past police reports Wednesday, Aug. 19, that offer more insight into the Aug. 13 discovery of the bodies.

The police records released Wednesday show that officers were called at least three times in the past in reference to the family and possible suicidal actions.

The most recent time was in February 2013 when deputies investigated a reported overdose of anti-depressants involving Tamisha Mendenhall.

At the time, Jeffrey Mendenall told deputies that both he and his wife had "dealt with depression and other mental disorders" and they were having financial issues.

The husband found a letter, believed to be a suicide note, that talked about how she loved her family and friends, but could not take care of them.

Police filled out a petition for hospitalization that typically involves a mental evaluation.

Police also responded to the couple's Garfield Township home in July 2012 on a report of a suicidal person.

In that case, the couple was not yet married. Tamisha told police that her boyfriend was missing, that she believed he had taken a butcher knife from the kitchen and that he had left an apparent suicide note on the kitchen table.

Police at that time also found a note on a computer screen to Mendenhall's brother.

Mendenall showed up later at the family's home and told police that he felt suicidal. At that time, police also wrote a petition for hospitalization for him.

The first police response was on June 1, 2008 and also involved Jeffrey Mendenall as a possible suicidal subject. In the report, police said he had been diagnosed with clinical depression.

Tamisha told police that her then-boyfriend, Mendenhall, had left a note on the dining room table that detailed "basic last wishes and patient advocacy directions."

She had last seen him May 30 and was worried about his welfare.

Police later discovered that Mendenhall was in the Detroit area, but was on his way back to Grand Traverse County. He had taken a gun with him.

Grand Traverse County sheriff's investigators say they continue to look into the suspected murder-suicide.

Detectives say it's important for surviving family members and the community to find answers.

Suicide is so selfish, but it's your choice to make. My brother chose it 16 years ago. His choice. His decision. I miss him so much but I got it. This? No.

The police records released Wednesday show that officers were called at least three times in the past in reference to the family and possible suicidal actions.

The family wasn't suicidal. The parents were. And it wasn't their right to take the kids with them.
