A woman in Colorado is facing dozens of criminal charges after her 76-year-old mother with dementia was found mauled to death among more than two dozen dogs living at their home.
Jessica Hoff, 47, was arrested on Friday in connection to the death of LaVonne Hoff, said a news release from the sheriff’s office in Pueblo county, Colorado, that laid out a case containing elder and animal neglect allegations.
The sheriff’s office said first responders pronounced Hoff dead at the Colorado City home which she shared with her daughter after deputies had been called to investigate a report about an unconscious woman on 3 February. Deputies noted that there were several dogs running around the Hoffs’ home – and there were about 24 other dogs and seven birds in cages there.

An autopsy later revealed that LaVonne Hoff had died of injuries resulting from a dog attack, the sheriff’s office said. Before she died, her daughter had left her home alone to run errands about 25 miles away in Pueblo, and the dogs that were loose at their property mauled the mother, deputies alleged.
Investigators subsequently searched a second property in Colorado City owned by Jessica Hoff. And there, they allegedly discovered 54 more dogs as well as seven more birds in her possession. The animals were “living in unsanitary conditions, and several of the dogs were in poor health”, the sheriff’s office wrote in its news release on the case.

Deputies worked with local animal control officers to seize the dogs and birds in question.

Meanwhile, they booked Jessica Hoff on criminal negligence resulting in the death of an at-risk adult as well as 54 counts of aggravated cruelty to animals.

Inside the home, investigators say Jessica had 22 living dogs and one dead dog as well as seven birds.

Jessica also had over 20 more dogs in a shed on Crow Cutoff in Colorado City.
We learned 14 dogs had to be humanely euthanized, 11 which were determined to have severe medical conditions and three were euthanized for being involved in the attack of LaVonne.

We also learned 28 of these dogs were adopted as were all seven birds in the home.
In a statement from the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region, they say, “As a socially conscious shelter, HSPPR treats each animal as an individual.

“With an impound of this scale it requires a lot of work and resources for the organization. In complex situations with these, our collaboration with state and local law enforcement is critical and we’re grateful for their partnerships.”

Jessica’s mother also had dementia and required 24 hour care and Jessica left her home alone the day of the incident.

Jessica Hoff, 48, pleaded guilty to one count of negligent cruelty to animals and was sentenced to three years of probation after her elderly mother was killed in a dog attack in her residence in February 2025.
In exchange for her plea of guilty, all other charges were dismissed by the DA. The plea agreement stipulated that Hoff would be sentenced to probation, although the exact length would be left up to the court.

Along with standard terms of probation, the court ordered that Hoff may not own pets until further order of the court.
Hoff was originally charged with felony negligence causing the death of an at-risk adult and 54 counts of animal cruelty after her mother, 76-year-old LaVonne Hoff, was killed by dogs in the Colorado City home in which she was living.

LaVonne Hoff, who had dementia, required 24-hour care and was left alone to care for 23 dogs in the house, according to the affidavit.
Sheriff's deputies responding to the residence observed that the house was filthy and unsanitary with blood stains throughout it, according to a Pueblo County Sheriff's Office arrest affidavit.

Several dogs were found in cages too small for them, with the cages covered in apparent feces. Most of the animals appeared to lack access to food and water, and one dog was found to be so malnourished and emaciated that its ribs and hip bones could be seen through the skin, PCSO detectives wrote in the affidavit.
Along with the body of LaVonne Hoff, a dead dog was recovered from inside the house, which was later determined to have died from bites and other injuries sustained in attacks by other dogs.

LaVonne Hoff was covered in injuries consistent with dog attacks, and her cause of death was determined to be a severed femoral artery in the thigh, which led to death by blood loss.
A total of 47 dogs were taken from the property by PCSO deputies, including 23 from inside the house and 24 from a nearby shed.
