Jared White, 35, was arrested on child abuse charges resulting in death following the death of his 5-month-old son.
Around 2 p.m. Sunday, police responded to a residence for an infant who was not breathing. The boy was transported to Plains Regional Medical Center where they were pronounced dead at 2:42 p.m.

Police initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the boy's death.

A second child who was removed from the home due to the living conditions, and as part of the ongoing investigation.
Police said they obtained information that "raised concerns regarding the nature and timing of the infant’s injuries."

Physical evidence was not consistent with White's story, according to police.

Jared White, 35, told police that his son Joseph had been inside a “bouncer” that flipped over. White said he found the child not breathing and attempted to revive him.
But an investigation revealed the child may have been strangled and died hours prior to police being called, according to a criminal complaint.
Audrie Liverani, described in court records as a friend of White’s, initially told police she discovered Joseph in the bouncer and that police were called and White began CPR. But Liverani later changed her story, records show, and told police she saw White strangling the baby.

Liverani said “she was afraid Jared would hurt her” and so she left the room.
Police were called to the home about 2 p.m. Sunday. Joseph was transported to the Clovis hospital where he was pronounced dead at 2:42 p.m., according to a police news release.

A second child inside the home was taken into protective custody “due to the conditions of the home and as part of the ongoing investigation,” the release stated.
The criminal complaint describes the scene at the house, with White being “distressed and out of touch with reality. … Jared would appear to be fine and have conversations on the phone, then began to cry and make outburst.”

Police said the home was “completely unsanitary and a possible health risk,” with animal feces throughout.

White told police the baby slept in the bouncer because his crib had cockroaches inside.
Liverani initially told police she had checked on Joseph about an hour before she found him not breathing in his bouncer.

She said the bouncer was “flipped over” and a blanket was on top of the baby.

“Audrie said she lifted the blanket and observed Joseph with his face in the mattress and his body to be purple,” court records show. “Audrie said at this time she yelled for Jared to come to the bedroom stating, “I think your baby is dead.”
But investigators said Joseph “was in full rigor mortis at the time he was transported to the hospital,” records show.

“In addition, it was discovered that once transported to the hospital, the rigor mortis began to release. … (T)his process would take between 6 to 8 hours to release. This would indicate that the death of Joseph would have had to have occurred much earlier than the story that was being given.”
In a second interview with police, Liverani said she heard Joseph crying about 1 a.m. Sunday. When she walked into his bedroom, she said she “observed Jared to have wrapped Joseph into a blanket … she then saw Jared lift Joseph into the air by his neck while still being wrapped in the blanket. Audrie described Jared to have both hands wrapped around Joseph’s neck and to have been strangling him.”

Investigators, court records show, determined the baby had “marks around his neck consistent with being strangled.”
