The parents and adult brother of two Shawano County children are charged with repeated physical abuse of a child and chronic neglect of a child causing great bodily harm.

Gabriel and Lisa Gutenberger and Lisa’s 18-year-old son Dade Marthaler were charged in connection to the abuse.

According to the criminal complaints, Child Protective Services was investigating serious allegations of child neglect and requested a deputy to be on-hand while she interviewed two children, a boy and a girl, in late June. The boy cried as he told them he was required to perform outdoor chores including cutting the lawn by hand, weeding the lawn, chopping wood and cutting firewood but was given very little water. He said he was given punishments if he did something wrong, such as not being allowed to eat, his dad spanking him with a belt if he bent his knees while weeding the lawn, or running 8 to 16 laps on the driveway for long distances. He said he was sometimes given water if he worked very hard.

The boy also said he was required to sleep on the floor of his bedroom even though it has a bed, and his parents installed a camera and alarm so they would know if he tried to leave his room. He wasn’t allowed to eat with the rest of the family. He says his family can’t stand him because of all his punishments.

The health services worker described the boy as “skin and bones.” He was taken to a Children’s Hospital which found the boy was underweight and malnourished, and had to be hospitalized to monitor him as he was given food. He was removed from the Gutenbergers’ home and placed in a foster home, where authorities say he had difficulty eating.

The deputy said the girl wasn’t willing to be interviewed because she was afraid she would be punished for saying anything. In regards to punishments, she would only say that’s what happens when you live a sinful life, that sins need punishment. The criminal complaint says the girl also had health issues but not as serious as her brother’s.

According to the criminal complaint, the camera in the boy’s room was still recording when the health worker and deputy came to the Gutenberger’s house. Because there was a lock on the camera, it continued recording while Marthaler talked to his mother about what to do with the alarms. Marthaler was also recorded carrying the camera to the basement and hiding it behind or under something on a shelf.

The Gutenbergers have six children, including Marthaler.

WTF? Another house of horrors. And I have no doubt we'll be seeing young Mr. Dade here on DD again!
Poor kids! I can only imagine what they're going through now trying to learn that what they thought they knew was actually all wrong and it is OK and normal to be hungry and OK and normal to act on that hunger and eat, among all the other shit they were used to like sleeping on the floor as punishment which is Not normal punishment, and WTF could they do to deserve that as punishment at all! This is so sad and disgusting. The Sin in all of this is only what was done to them. I hope the girl doesn't revert to this horrid idea of what they have taught her - ever. I fear she may have that in the back of her mind even as she is receiving psychological counseling.

Beasts, all of these adults. Rot in hell.

The boy told a CPS worker that his parents made him perform physical labor with little food or water, forced him to sleep on the floor and tasked his sister with keeping watch over him so he didn't misbehave, according to the criminal complaint charging Marthaler.

The boy cried as he told the social worker that his parents wouldn't feed him breakfast if he didn't finish his chores by a certain time. He would have to do chores such as cutting the lawn by hand, weeding the lawn, and cutting firewood, according to the complaint. He said he would sometimes be given water if he worked very hard.

He also was responsible for feeding livestock, cleaning the bathroom every day and sweeping the house, according to the complaint.

If the boy did something like bending his knees while he was weeding the lawn, Gabriel Gutenberger, his father, would hit him with a belt, according to the complaint. The boy's parents would also punish him by making him run laps around the driveway or withholding food and water.

The boy also told the social worker that he had to sleep on the floor of a guest bedroom. His parents put a camera and alarm in the room so they would know if he tried to leave. His sister slept in the same room so she could watch him as well because he was caught sneaking food in the past, the complaint says.

The boy also told authorities that he was not allowed to eat meals with the rest of the family and not allowed to talk to other family members except to thank them or tell them he finished his chores.

After the social worker visit, a foster parent took the boy to the doctor the next day for a checkup. The doctor said the boy was underweight, malnourished and "his blood levels were all off," according to the complaint. He had difficulty eating food at the foster home and was diagnosed with refeeding syndrome, meaning his body could not handle eating normal amounts of food due to his history of malnutrition at his parents' house. He had to be hospitalized.

The boy's sister did not want to talk with the social worker at first because she was scared she would be punished, according to the complaint.

A few days later, she told authorities that she and the other children in the house had to monitor her brother all the time and tell their parents if he misbehaved. She had to sleep in the guest bedroom with her brother and cook meals for the two of them, which they then had to eat by themselves in the guest room, the complaint states.

The boy told authorities that his sister would get similar punishments as him, but the other children at the house did not. In addition to Marthaler, three other children lived at the house, too. The criminal complaint does not mention any abuse against them, and doctors said they were in good health.

The girl was also placed in foster care and had similar health problems as her brother, though not as severe. Doctors found her physical development was three to four years behind what it should have been, according to the complaint.

The boy was able to get help for him and his sister by dropping a note into his aunt's purse during church. In the note, he told his aunt about how his parents didn't feed him or give him bathroom breaks and how he is monitored with a camera and alarms. He told authorities that he had to pretend he was writing a Father's Day card because his sister was watching him.

He said he wrote the note for help because "I didn't know if I could make it anymore," according to the complaint.

When CPS workers and police officers came to the Gutenbergers' house in June to talk to the boy and girl outside, Marthaler called his mother, Lisa Gutenberger, who told him and the other children to hide the cameras and alarms from the guest bedroom in the basement, where Shawano County sheriff's deputies later found them, according to the complaint.

In time, I hope the sister comes to realize that he was not only a hero to himself but her as well.

All the children will need individual and family counseling to heal from what happened to them.

While some children were not abused seeing the mistreatment of the two that were is also traumatizing and can lead to anxiety and worry that at any time they could be abused.

The boy who was severely abused has to work out his anger and resentment towards his siblings.

Lisa Gutenberger, 40, and Gabriel Gutenberger, 39, of Waukechon, were both charged in July with two counts each of child abuse and child neglect causing great bodily harm.

The Gutenbergers and Marthaler are all free in lieu of signature bonds, according to court records.

Let's see if the worthless pair of shits show up for court.

I wouldn't complain if they weren't there, as long as it was because they'd jumped off a really tall bridge and that was the end of them. I would never of course encourage some third party to do BULLET TO THE HEAD on them while they were wandering around free pre-trial. It might, after all, be possible to accidentally bullet the wrong person, or hit a bystander, and in any case it's illegal. But if the judge could decide BULLET TO THE HEAD I sure as fuck would not complain because they are a fucking waste of our breathing air and should GTFO.

Wonder what's up with the 18 year old, perhaps he counts as brainwashed.

Wonder why these two were singled out and why the boy was treated much worse.
Scapegoater's gonna scapegoat. Part of the psychology of their little fucking joy, I guess.

Wonder why these two were singled out and why the boy was treated much worse. His bravery in sneaking out that note may have saved both their lives. This is another case in which the "parents" need to be charged with torture, etc., not simple neglect.

they might be children from a different parent, see below

It is with great sadness that we share with you the tragedy that has fallen upon the Gutenberger family. Gabe & Stephanie Gutenberger were involved in a serious car accident on Friday and Stephanie did not survive this accident.

This tragic event has left a husband without his wife and children without their mother.

A Wisconsin mother and father are headed to prison for forcing their son to do strenuous outdoor chores and taking away his food as a form of punishment.
Gabriel Gutenberger, 43, and Lisa Gutenberger, 45, were sentenced to three years behind bars followed by five years of probation, court records say. The Gutenbergers pleaded guilty in April to chronic neglect of a child and causing mental harm to a child. As part of the plea deal, charges of physical abuse of a child and false imprisonment were dismissed but "read in," meaning they were considered at sentencing.
Child Protective Services began investigating the Gutenbergers in June 2020, according to criminal complaints obtained by Law&Crime. The agency was reportedly investigating alleged abuse of their son, then 15, and daughter, then 13, at the family home in Shawano County. When interviewed by CPS, the son became emotional and told investigators of the litany of abuse he was subjected to, including being forced to cut the lawn by hand and weeding and chopping wood, per the complaint. His parents gave him little water as he completed these tasks.
When he did something as trivial as bending his knees while picking up weeds, his father beat him with a belt or forced him to run around the driveway more than 15 times, the complaint said. He also was required to sleep on the floor next to his bed and was not allowed to eat if he got in trouble. His parents kept a camera in his room to make sure he didn't get up on the bed, according to the complaint.
"I was sneaking food from being so hungry," the boy told investigators.

These people got a slap on the wrist for torturing these kids. They have to live with the pain and memories for the rest of their lives. Wisconsin locked up Nicolai Miu for 20 years for defending himself at Apple River, but locked these 3 child torturers up for much less time!
