San Francisco’s three-year plan to build a single public toilet for $1.7 million could be going down the drain, as California Gov. Gavin Newsom is threatening to withhold the funds until the city figures out a more efficient away to use the money.

The toilet’s sky-high cost was met with outcry last week, prompting California Assemblyman Matt Haney to cancel an event celebrating the new bathroom in the Noe Valley Town Square.

Newsom, the former mayor of San Francisco, is now threatening to withhold the funds altogether.

“A single, small bathroom should not cost $1.7 million,” Erin Mellon, a spokesperson for Newsom, told Fox News Digital on Sunday. “The state will hold funding until San Francisco delivers a plan to use this public money more efficiently. If they cannot, we will go back to the legislature to revoke this appropriation.”

Haney told the San Francisco Chronicle, which originally blew the lid on the $1.7 million toilet, that the governor’s office had been in touch with him about the price tag.

“I support not spending the money — the cost is ridiculous, and it will take far too long,” Haney told the newspaper.

“Noe Valley should get a bathroom, but $1.7 million should pay for seven bathrooms, and it should happen much quicker… I fully support and agree with the governor here, and we’re going to work together to get this done cheaper and quicker and also send the message that San Francisco needs to fix its broken processes.”

Commifornica just trying to remain competitive. Titanium and gold toilets are not cheap and take a long time to design properly to fit multiple size political assholes. Can’t beat a golden shower in a golden toilet
Wonder who’s getting the biggest kickback from our tax dollars, I’m guessing 1.2 million in kickbacks, 500k for toilet

It took NASA six years and $23 million to come up with the design for the new, high-tech porta potty. That cost actually covers two toilets.

I don't know whether to be more bewildered about the price or construction time! How could you spend 3yrs building a single stall toilet?? Like, I really want to see that construction timeline.

$1,700,000 for just a single toilet? Is the stall meant to be made completely of 24 karat gold? I would not mind a price tag such as that for an elaborate, state-of-the-art restroom facility with a few dozen toilets and stalls. But spending all that on just one toilet is far too much, and is also insulting to people, Californian or not, who struggle to make ends meet and aspire to buy a house or land that is far less money yet still hardly attainable to them if at all.

On top of that, adding one single toilet in a city such as San Francisco, regardless of budget, will only put a band-aid on the issues of both restroom availability and public cleanliness. Building a restroom plaza would fit the public's needs much better than building or placing a single toilet. The issue with building a single toilet is that the restroom is either 100% or 0% occupied. Everyone else will still need to look elsewhere if this one overpriced toilet has someone inside there doing their business. This would not be as severe of an issue with a multi-restroom facility.

I have no idea why any civic employees or politicians would think positively of spending $1,700,000 on a single toilet. That is so clownish.

A public restroom in San Francisco once projected to cost $1.7M is finally open: Take a look inside

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – A controversial public restroom installed last month in San Francisco’s Noe Valley neighborhood is finally ready for the public to use.

Plans for the restroom first gained national attention in 2022, after the San Francisco Chronicle reported on the projected price tag of $1.7 million. The cost prompted conversations about wasteful spending, and became the butt of jokes aimed at the city.

There's your $300,000 toilet, what the cost was finally winnowed down to after a local company stepped in and someone donated the prefab toilet. Oh yeah and what you can't see is the baby changing table.

Well worth the cost, heh :penguin:

Tho it does look as if it'll sleep a dozen or more.
