A jealous husband confessed to using a razor blade to slash his pregnant wife's throat while they were in the middle of having sex, police in Brazil said.

Marcelo Araújo, 21, claimed under questioning that he killed his wife, 22-year-old Francine dos Santos, after they rowed about her becoming pregnant for the third time.

The couple already had two children, a daughter, four, and a son, two.

He reportedly admitted that he didn't want any more children, resented sharing his wife with them and hated the financial burden it placed on him as a young dad.

The suspect was found seriously injured after the crime, with cuts to his neck and wrists, in the family home in Várzea Paulista, a municipality in the State of São Paulo.

Cops said he had apparently tried to take his own life.

Investigators told Brazilian news outlet G1 that the admission came following more than six weeks of interrogation during which the accused gave several versions of what happened.

According to detectives, the suspect claimed that on December 22 last year, the couple started off discussing plans for their family Christmas dinner but matters escalated and it turned into a blazing argument about the pregnancy.

Shortly after the disagreement the pair appeared to resolve their differences and headed for the bedroom to make love.

But during the intimate session the suspect apparently stabbed his wife, a make-up artist, with a knife several times before slashing her throat with a blade.

The man arrested for killing his pregnant wife during sexual intercourse in Várzea Paulista (SP) was sentenced to 18 years in prison for femicide . The decision was announced on Wednesday night (16). The case took place in December 2019.

The jury trial began at 10:30 AM and ended around 7:00 PM . Five witnesses were heard, four of whom were common to both the defense and the prosecution, according to the Court of Justice.

Marcelo Augusto de Sousa Araújo was sentenced to 18 years in prison under a closed regime for aggravated homicide due to a frivolous motive, cruel means, a method that hindered the victim's defense, and femicide.

The victim, Francine Rigo dos Santos, was a makeup artist, 21 years old, and a few months pregnant at the time of the crime. The autopsy report from September 16, 2020, attached to the case file on December 1 of the same year, indicated that she suffered a cut to her throat, a fracture to her right wrist, and a traumatic brain injury.

During questioning, Marcelo stated that he used a blade to kill Francine during sexual intercourse. According to the report from the Institute of Forensic Medicine (IML), the injuries caused respiratory arrest, cardiocirculatory arrest, unconsciousness, hypothermia, and dehydration. The injuries inflicted on the victim were 16 and six centimeters long, in addition to a fracture in her right wrist.

According to police, the husband gave several versions of the crime and confessed to murdering his wife during sexual intercourse after they argued because she told him she was pregnant. The news outlet g1 also learned that the two argued about Christmas dinner and the young woman's pregnancy.
