A teenage boy died after he struck his head on a piece of metal while riding the exterior of a train on New York's subway Saturday night, authorities said.
The fatal 'subway surfing' incident happened about 8:45 p.m., when the youth fell from a Manhattan-bound 7 train at the Queensboro Plaza station, reports the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
The surfer, who has not been identified, was found about 20 feet beyond the elevated, outdoor station, police said.
He is believed to be about 14, said cops.
It was not clear if the youth was clinging to the side or rear of the train car, or whether he was possibly on top.
A group of teens mourned the youth from a nearby fast-food restaurant as the investigation was underway, the Daily News reports.
One of the youths told the news outlet that he blamed himself.
'It's my fault', the youth told the News. 'I always go up with him when he asks me. I should have told him no'.
