"Officers from Antioch and Pittsburg police took Candice Carter into custody Thursday afternoon with a high-risk arrest warrant after determining she was responsible for the death of 17-year-old Edgar Martinez, who is not believed to have played any role in the original argument.

Police officials said the conflict started on March 27, 2005, when Carter got into an argument with a group of men she believed to be rival gang members on the 300 block of West 20th Street in Antioch. After the quarrel, Carter allegedly returned to the area with two men and fired into Martinez’s apartment around 11:37 p.m., striking him in the chest as he slept next to his father.

At least one other person is suspected to have fired shots, and authorities said they expect to make more arrests in connection to the case.

The Chronicle reported at the time that Martinez had recently arrived to the country from Mexico and worked in construction to send money to his mother and brother in Michoacan.

A dozen or more bullets were fired into the apartment building on West 20th Street where Martinez lived with his father and cousins.

Several people who knew Martinez told The Chronicle in 2005 that one of his cousins, a young man who lived with him, was a Sureño gang member who had trouble with local Norteños."

Two former gang members accused of shooting up a San Francisco Bay Area apartment in 2005, killing a sleeping teen who was not their intended target, have each accepted plea deals and 14-year prison terms, according to attorneys for the case.

Murder charges were dropped against George Marcus Siever, 36, and Brian Lee Gray Sr., 35, after they accepted manslaughter convictions, the East Bay Times reported Sunday.

Forty--year-old Candice Marie Carter, the third defendant accused of setting up the shooting, took a plea deal last year and a 13-year prison sentence, the newspaper said.

All three were arrested last year in the killing of 17-year-old Edgar Martinez in Antioch.

Police described the shooting as gang-related, but also personal, allegedly motivated by Carter’s desire for revenge after she was attacked by a group of rival gang members. Investigators believe Martinez’s cousin, a member of the rival gang, was the intended target.
