In early December, the Children, Youth and Families Department put a 48-hour hold on a 1-month old girl and inspected the family's Socorro County home after she was taken to an Albuquerque hospital with a brain bleed and bruising from suspected child abuse.
The baby was discharged but was back in the hospital two weeks after the initial injury, this time with more than a dozen rib fractures and broken limbs.
They were booked into the Socorro County Detention Center, and each faces two counts of abuse of a child resulting in great bodily harm.
“The victim and the other children in the home are currently safe and in state's custody,” NMSP spokesman Mark Soriano said. “No other information is available at this time.”
It is unclear how the CYFD investigation played out or what happened after the girl and the couple's other infant daughter were taken into the state's custody following the initial incident. The department did not respond to several calls from the Journal on Thursday night.
What is known is that the baby was discharged from the hospital after a doctor warned State Police detectives that she was “at great risk” for more injuries and a “high likelihood of death” if returned to the home where the abuse occurred without “removal of the perpetrator.”
