On Wednesday, Bryan Adam Rainer, 22, and Katherine Jo Rainer, 25, who also is known as Katherine Locke, of Killeen each were indicted on two counts of injury to a child following the death of their child last year. According to Killeen police, the 5-month-old infant weighed less when she died than when she was born, and died of severe malnourishment.
On Sept. 11, 2022, Killeen police were called to a residence in the city regarding an infant who had died. The child, Alexandra Faith Rainer, who was almost 6 months old, had been found deceased in her crib.

“The child was wearing a soiled diaper and clothing,” according to an arrest affidavit. “(The officer) noted the sheet and mattress cover of the crib were stained and appeared to have mold on them. (The officer) noted the child’s stomach was sunken in, her ribcage was protruding and the skin on her arms was loose and sagging. (The officer) believed the child appeared malnourished.”
Police interviewed the child’s parents, Bryan and Katherine Rainer, who were responsible for her care.
“Katherine stated the child was born on March 14, 2022, and there were no complications at birth,” police said. “Katherine stated the child had difficulty feeding and that she noticed the child was losing weight. Katherine stated she thought about taking the child to a hospital but did not. Bryan ... stated he was hardly ever home and when he was home, he was watching TV, on the computer or asleep. Bryan described the child as fussy and didn’t want to take a bottle. Bryan stated he and Katherine had talked about taking the child to the ER or scheduling a doctor’s appointment because the child was fussy and she looked too skinny but no action was taken. Bryan stated ... he noticed the child was losing weight and her skin hung loose on her body and asked Katherine if she was feeding the child.”
Police looked into the child’s medical records, which showed that the child was 6.7 pounds at birth and had gained just under a pound at a two-week appointment.

“There were not other medical records for Alexandra Rainer after the two-week visit,” according to the affidavit. “The autopsy report described the child as having wasted muscles, loose redundant skin, shrunken eyes, an emaciated face and prominent clavicles, ribs, vertebrae and scapulae. Alexandra weighed 6.17 pounds at the time of her autopsy, which made her less than 1% of the normal weight of children the same age. The cause of death was starvation and neglect and the manner of death was homicide.”
