A 61-year-old man has been indicted in connection with the killing of George “Junior” Burdynski, a 10-year-old boy who disappeared from his Brentwood neighborhood more than 33 years ago, Prince George’s County prosecutors announced Wednesday.

Joseph Lynch was indicted on charges of murder, manslaughter, accessory after the fact, second-degree child abuse and two counts of second-degree sex offense, according to State’s Attorney Tara Jackson’s office.
Junior was last seen riding his bicycle in his neighborhood on May 24, 1993. His disappearance prompted an extensive investigation involving county police and federal authorities. His remains have never been recovered.

Police announced charges against Lynch in September after cold case detectives interviewed a man who said he witnessed the events leading to Junior’s death. The witness was 13 when Junior disappeared and lived in the same neighborhood, police said.
Investigators said the witness was inside a home with Junior and Lynch that day. He told detectives that Lynch ordered him to sexually assault Junior and that the boy was killed during the assault.

Police said the witness also described Lynch’s involvement in removing and disposing of Junior’s body. The witness reported that Lynch had sexually and physically abused him for more than four years, according to police.
The investigation into Junior’s disappearance previously led to the arrests of Lynch and two other men in separate cases involving the sexual abuse of boys in Mount Rainier, Brentwood and Hyattsville, police said. In those cases, Lynch was sentenced in 1994 and released in 2006.

Earlier this year, police charged Lynch with repeatedly sexually abusing two teenage boys at a Mount Rainier home between 2007 and 2014. Investigators said those cases led cold case detectives to the witness who provided information about Junior’s death.

Lynch was involved in a sex ring that abused young children....

The Child Abuse Ring & Convictions
  • The Ring Members: Lynch, Leak, and Kowalski operated the ring together, targeting and sexually abusing multiple young boys in the Mount Rainier, Brentwood, and Hyattsville areas—including several of Junior's friends. [1, 2]
  • The Tactics: The men heavily targeted local children by offering them cash, video games, and other gifts. The investigation also revealed they were utilizing early internet-connected computers to communicate with other pedophiles, a discovery that the FBI stated directly revolutionized how federal law enforcement tracks child exploitation. [1, 2]
  • The Sentences: All three men were arrested, prosecuted, and convicted in 1994 for their extensive crimes. James Kowalski received a massive sentence of more than 250 years in prison, while Lynch was released in 2006 before being re-arrested. [1, 2, 3]
Leak was originally given a sixty year sentence that was reduced to 30 years and he is now released back into the public.

⚖️ Their Connection to Junior's Murder
At this time, only Joseph Lynch has been criminally charged with Junior Burdynski's murder. [1, 2]
While all three men were actively abusing neighborhood children concurrently, the specific fatal assault on May 24, 1993, took place inside a room where only Lynch, Junior, and the 13-year-old coerced victim were present. Police have not publicly implicated Leak or Kowalski as direct accomplices in the actual killing or the immediate disposal of Junior's body. [1, 2]
